Do not drive far as the fluid is not getting to the transmission valve bodies . the cause of this is the filter has collected too much burnt material in the transmission . This collection of burnt fluid has varnished the filter screen to create a seal of the filter screen . Removing the screen and cleaning the filter or replaceing the filter will stop the noise and stop slippage .Remember to clean the pan and magnents in pan & put magnets back in pan before installing pan and filler tube to transmission . Alyays fill with new fluid . Synthetic Dextron 4 or better works best if you haul a ton in the back of your bed .

You said do not drive far as the fluid is not getting to the valve bodies. I have a whine like my power steering pump is going out like it did on my 99 Tacoma that I once had. I replaced it on that truck and the whine went away. How do you tell if it's the tranny or power steering pump besides moving the wheels back & forth and that's when you hear the whine. If you drove with that whining sound but your transmission shifts fine and the level of fluid is fine in both the transmission & power steering pump. Then what should I do next? I have a 3.4 V6 TRD 4x4 with an automatic transmission

YMMV...but I have been driving with mine for the past 30K miles with a bit of a transmission pump whine. It changes with the gear changes and then drops off in OD. Not as much pressure is required. When I replaced the engine in my truck I changed the filter and cleaned it up and stuff. It is more annoying than anything else. Keep the fluid fresh and it should be okay. Going to swap out the tranny one day, but not today.

How many miles are on it, and how long has it been doing it? Mine has 270K, been doing it since I bought it at 242K.

I noticed this morning my truck didn't have that whining noise till it warmed up. Then the whining started. Still can't isolate to the PSP or the Tranny. The college I go to has a auto shop so after school today I'm going to have the teacher try and diagnose it

Hmmmmmmmm...check your fluid level when warm and make sure the level is appropriate. And the color. I changed mine just last year. It is starting to get a little dirty looking. Does it follow your shift points or is it constant. How is your power steering level? Does the rack leak?

Do you think it could be the tranny pump if it makes the whining noise in park, neutral and drive?

Mine did the same it was a bad torque converter. It sounds like a turbo as you raise speed.

How often are you supposed to change the fluid/filter/do other transmission maintenance. Asking for a friend...

If you pull the trans dipstick it needs to be cherry red so mileage may vary depending on how hard you drive so going by mileage is out. I would change if dirty never flush and keep changing every 500 miles until it gets back to red color to be safe with the transmission, it also helps to change the filter in the pan its a p.i.t.a. Good luck its lots of money if you don’t get it saved by drain and fills, use dextron 4 and up. I have good luck with mobil 1 synthetic transmission fluid.
