Here back again with the same issue I posted before … whining humming noise coming from transmission area I got a 2003 tacoma 2.7 4x4 . Humming goes away after I press in clutch comes back when I let go of clutch. Did a rebuild kit with new bearings and seals for the transmission. Humming and whining is still there in neutral only goes away when clutch in pressed in got a new pilot bearing and clutch release bearing… any more ideas what I could be ??? Here is a link to my cars noise.. I’m out of options any help I would appreciate it

I believe this is the input shaft bearing, mine makes the noise and I've done many hours of research between forums on it and always come to this conclusion. It's also not really worth replacing because it'll just start making it again usually.

edit: some cases have said that it can also be the release/throw-out bearing and/or the pilot bearing

I have this on my 3rd gen comes and goes. Sounds like a bad throw out bearing but it isn’t.

Yeah I’m stuck mechanics don’t know what else to do also, i might have to do a clutch job and see if that helps but I don’t wanna just keep dumping money on it with no solution…

Could it also have to do with bad bearings in the transfers case??

I have seen you post on other threads. I have the same problem. Shifts flawlessly... but whines in 1,2,3,5 and N when the clutch is out. 4th is direct drive and runs silent. Like @LiftedOn35s I have spent hours reading up on it. My consensus is that it is the input shaft bearing. I have read other people installing new Marlin tranny's and the noise comes back.

Definitely pilot or throw out bearing, despite being new, you could have gotten a dud. You know QA/QC on anything automotive these days are hit or miss.

That reminds me of 2001-2005 Honda Civics with manual tranny's. They had a known issue with their pilot bearings. They would prematurely go out and so you had to replace them every so often. Some models and some gen vehicles are just inherently flawed due to factory design, or undersizing of their rotating assemblies and it sounds like Toyota refuses to acknowledge their BS with their manual transmissions. Which really sucks because manual transmission vehicles are supposed to be bulletproof on the transmission side of things MOST of the time due to less complexity of the build.

I had this exact problem in a 93 Nissan truck, it failed fianally in Winslow AZ and I drove to HB Ca in 4th gear. I left the truck with a local mechanic for a transmission rebuild and went overseas for a 42 day work shift, cost me like 3.4K

I just kinda figure it’s a feature, not a bug. I just replaced the throwout and pilot bearings when I did my clutch and the little howl noise is there again, just like for the last 70k miles.

Brand new throw-out/pilot bearing on my 99. I never heard the transmission before putting a new clutch kit in so probably input shaft bearing. Trans that came with the truck was essentially filled with Nutella and dirt so it’s still an improvement.

If it strands me I’ll just set the truck on fire since it’s my beater.

not sure of the exact number as it was like 25 yers ago but it was a few grand, worked great for another few 100K til I sold it

And it was the imput shaft bearing. I bought the truck used with like 80K and 'prolly the fluid had never been changed. Getting from AZ to the beach in 4th was exciting!

I have the same problem. Anybody find a solution? I've had the same noise started after letting the truck sit 6 mo. after an engine rebuild with new clutch/flywheel. Did a rebuild on the w59 transmission with new bearings, syncros, etc. and the noise is still there in all gears but 4th. Shifts into and runs fine in all gears.
