I purchased a week old set of 17" rims off a 4Runner. They were literally on the vehicle for 1 week.

I plan to put 245/70R17s on them and run them 9 months of the year. Then use the OEM steel rims that came on my SR for the winter. I think the 245/70R17s will look a bit better under the truck and the alloy rims are much nicer than the steel OEMs.

So I need to find 4 TPMS sensors for the alloy wheels that will be compatible with my 2022 SR.

    Rock Auto gives two options:

    VDO / CONTINENTAL SE10007 REDI-Sensor; 315 MHz; Multi-application Sensor
    Metal Clamp-in Stem

    or

    VDO CONTINENTAL SE10006 REDI-Sensor; 315 MHz; Multi-application Sensor
    Rubber Snap-in Stem

They are both Programmed and around $26.00.

Is the only difference the metal clamp in stem vs the rubber snap in stem?

Are these what I need to make the rims work with my TPMS?

Please share anything else I need to know. I have never had to replace TPMS so I don't know much about them.

In terms of compatibility, both are exactly the same, and they will work with your SR's TPMS module.

If you think you'll ever get the wheels in precarious situations such as off roading, hitting the curbs, rubber snap-in stem ones might be better because they can take a beating. Also they don't corrode like the metal ones. But UV, heat will weaken them over time.

However, if you plan on every swapping and transferring TPMS sensors, I think rubber stem can't be removed and reapply because it might get damaged in the process. You might have to get new rubber stems.

The metal ones are the exact opposite, you can break them if a rock hit them really hard. But they can be easily swapped or transferred and are not afraid of UV.

Just in case if you didn't know, for all 3rd gen Tacomas, new TPMS sensors have to be registered to the ECU if you want to avoid warning and display tire pressure on SR5 and above trim.
On late model year 4Runners there's a setting for automatic scanning sensors and registering after driving for 20 -50 miles. Not on Tacoma

T4R TPMS sensors will not work in 3rd Gen Tacomas; been there done that.

I found the best setup is to get a set of 4 Autel MX315 clone sensors, copy each OEM sensor ID# from your steelies, upload each number to one of the new Autel clone sensors for the new wheels, and yer done.
No programming the truck ECU as it already has those 4 ID#s in the ECU/PCM.
I have 3 sets of wheels for my '17 TRDOR and can swap them when I want and just use the TPMS button by my right knee to make the ECU/PCM see where the ID#s are.

That's really neat setup. I use Autel TPMS relearn scanner each time after swapping wheels to write to OBD2 those new sensors. Not having to do that is nice.

But I don't understand why there is still the need to press the TPMS reset button. Shouldn't the truck just recognize those cloned sensors automatically if the IDs are exactly the same?

It will but not in the physical location. Follow your OM section when you have tires rotated and how the button works.

Thanks. I didn't know that procedure is required by the OM when rotating tires or changing tire size.

Now that you mentioned, I think I know why my Tacoma SR, Corolla Hatchback, Prius have the tire pressure on the wrong position.
Just FYI, what those 3 vehicles have in common is that they do NOT have an on-vehicle dash gauge individual tire pressure readout display.

I'm only able to access the tire pressure direct readout via the Toyota App, and that's how I determined the TPMS system displays the incorrect position.

For example, I know the cold tire pressure of the Corolla of all 4 tires are at 33 psi, after driving for a while, the App display the rear 2 wheels reach 36 psi, which does not make sense because front wheels always heat up more than the rear thus more psi increased. I concluded that must have been the result of not having TPMS reset done to relearn the position of the sensors after tire rotation.

But I think for Tacoma (SR5 and above trims), they have the direct position read out and I believe this system eventually will figure out the correct sensor at the correct position. I know this because I never perform that TPMS initialization procedure after tire rotation and they turned out ok (I did notice that the individual tire pressure reading would be in the wrong position for the first 10-20 mins, but after the numbers would "flip" position and everything good afterwards).

It's nonetheless still the best practice to follow the OM's recommendation for TPMS initialization so that the correct cold air pressure baseline is established. I think I read it somewhere on 3rd gen sub forum that a member's Tacoma would light up a big orange TPMS warning at 29 psi, and that's probably the case that the baseline was set way too high.

I have recently bought a 22 trd OR and planning to buy a second set of wheels for winter. I'm planning to buy a new set with aftermarket tpms in it but this set up is nice and seems hassle free. I'm just wondering if i put the AUTEL mx315, what device do i need to get to program it into the tacoma ECU? Really interested in this set up and i'm new to tacomas. I'm just learning now. Can you please elaborate the process. Thanks in advance!!

With the Autel 315MX Clone sensors you manually add each of the four OEM sensor ID numbers to each Autel sensor with the appropriate Autel tool (I have the 601) and done. Now each Autel sensor has the OEM ID number which are already programmed into the truck ECU/PCM. Done.

How do you find the OEM sensor ID numbers?

The Autel tool scans them off each sensor.

Autel make a tool that can read the sensor IDs off the ECU? I don’t have the original wheels or sensors.

I'm doing it the same way as Eurowner. For multiple sets of wheels it's by far the easiest solution

Just a note: I found out last week that my local NAPA store actually sells the TPMS sensors and will program for free. I didn't want to make the investment and buy the hardware to do this.

Yes that's them. It took them a couple of times to get them sync'd with the computer. They had to update the code on their handheld programmer. Confirm they will program them for you. Toyota Dealer wanted to charge me $40 a wheel to program them! That would net out to about $320 for 4 *ucking tire pressure sensors! Not happening!!!
Good luck with the ride and welcome to TW! Really good bunch of folks here. A little bit of everything here!

Awesome! Appreciate the heads up. And thanks. I've restrained from modding the first year plus of ownership, and the mod bug has bit haha.

I contacted my local NAPA and sadly, he said none of the stores in my area can program them :(
