    They're both heavy duty
One is for colder weather areas.

Both will work, I'd be inclined to get the 1.8kw one over the 1.2kw because it is more powerful.

You can do a VIN lookup (enter your VIN in the upper right search bar), or just look for the part# on your current starter.

As said though, both will work just fine.

If the starter is just "clicking" and not engaging when you turn the key, you could just get away with a new plunger and solenoid kit.

I replaced mine at 283k miles.

2k miles later it still starts up as if I had just put in a new starter; all else was in excellent shape.

    Before -

    After -

    Parts kit -

Fortunately he's a Prerunner so he'll have more room than others.

Automatic 4x4's are the most difficult. Even manual 4x4's have plenty of room.

The manual (even with Cold-Spec) always used the 1.4 kW starter (28100-07010). The automatic used either the 1.4 kW or the 1.8 kW (28100-62030) for Cold-Spec.

This is true for the 2WD and 4WD with the 5VZ-FE (3.4L).

My starter is grinding every so often, is something like that even repairable?

Im leaning toward the cold weather starter. even with the 2wd prerunner is it still a pain to get it in? I live in california and dont plan on taking my truck anywhere cold so if I can spare myself a major headache id prefer that.

Also it looks like the one on my truck is the smaller one and when my truck was a younger girl she had no problem starting in the snow, is the larger starter for like extreme cold or if the car is sitting in the cold for a long time or something?

Can't comment on that, never had that issue.

You'll be fine with either starter.

And yes it'll be super easy taking it out.

A 4x4 Automatic V6 is the most difficult configuration, and even that one was easy when I had to tackle it.

Napa sells the plunger and contacts.
    Good as new.
    Better than aftermarket new.
Stick with the smaller non cold weather starter if you don't rebuild it.
