So after reading a few threads with people asking/curious about this, I thought I'd check and clear it up.

    L4 5MT: 8.8" 3.91:1 without Locker
    L4 6AT: 8.0" 4.30:1 without Locker

    V6 6MT Except TRD Off-Road: 8.8" 4.30:1 without Locker
    V6 6MT TRD Off-Road: 8.8" 4.30:1 with Locker

    V6 6AT Except TRD Off-Road: 8.0" 3.91:1 without Locker
    V6 6AT TRD Off-Road: 8.8" 3.91:1 with Locker

Summary: All manual transmission models have the 8.8" differential (even the 2.7). For automatic transmission models, only the TRD OR gets the 8.8" diff, all other automatic transmission models have the 8.0" diff.

What does this say about adding a toyota locker to a 8.8" differential that didn't come with one? Would it basically be a drop in component or is the differential case different, or the gearsets?

The rear axle housing is the same with or without diff lock, as are the ring & pinion sets. The differential housing/pumpkin is different to allow the lock actuator coil wiring through and provides a mounting point for the position switch/sensor.

So Toyota is going back to the 8" diff on non TRD OR Models instead of the 8.4" that is currently used? Seems odd if it is true. Also, if the TRD OR uses an 8.8, is it a mechanical locker or computer controlled diff via brakes and such? And last, the 8" axle housings are not the same regardless of if it has a locker or not. They are the same basic housing and a non locker housing can be modified to fit a locked 3rd member, but it isn't simply a pull and swap deal as the flange on the locker housing is cut to allow clearance for the locking mechanism etc.

You're a wealth of information. Thanks for taking the time.

What is the difference between an axle housing and a differential housing? I always thought of those as the same thing.

I'm dreaming of a world where the only difference between the 8.8" 4.30 axle with and without the locker is that the locker components are simply missing, and wiring ports plugged with a fancy cork. Much like how the old SR V6 didn't come with fogs but was wired for them. You just had to remove the plastic inserts and plug in factory fogs, the relay, and a switch. If only it could be so simple.

Maybe I should have said differential carrier. The axle housing is the rear end minus the differential, the differential is the pumpkin/what bolts into the axle housing.

As I said in the other thread, the 8.4" is actually an 8.0" ring gear. Toyota does not call it an 8.4" It's the same size ring gear as the 8.0" and it is an 8.0". Ring gears are not measured on the OD. It has 12 bolts instead of 10 and a slightly different bearing cap design, but they're both the same size.

The differential on the new one is not smaller.

The rear end of the OR is a mechanical locker. The front end is an LSD controlled by the brakes

Jeff can you tell me the fluid capacity of my rear diff? I can't seem to find an exact answer. '16 OR 4x4 AT.

    Thank you

So will the 3rd gen 8.0” carriers fit in older 8.0” housings? Or is the 3rd gen 8.0” akin to the so-called 8.4” differential?

Just curious, why would you be looking to swap 3rd gen gears into an older truck? Why not just get aftermarket parts that you know will fit

Picking up a used 3rd member can be a cheap and easy way to regear - 3.73 to 4.30 for example.

Wonder if the older 8.0 can fit on the newer tacomas?

98 4WD Tacoma SR5. Beat to hell, but no rust! 343,727 miles

    Hello all.

Was hoping I can get some info from the experts.

I have a 98, SR5, 4x4, 6 cylinder, manual transmission, with manual hub locks, NOT TRD, 2.5 inch lift.

Here's what I think must have happened. Without my knowing, the needle bearings on the drivers side of the my front diff (the ones ECGS makes the replacement bushing for) exploded long ago which allowed the splined input hub of the CV axle to work its way loose from the front diff. By continuing to drive the truck like this for who knows how long, with the CV axle just rolling around in the drivers side diff opening, the CV axle wore that opening out so much it's no longer round and trying to install the ECGS Clamshell Bushing is impossible because the opening is so wallowed out the bushing has nothing to hold it in place. Not to mention the seals were disintegrated and sand and water got in there etc. It's a brown mess.

I'm assuming I need to replace the front diff.

The code on my door sticker says AT/M B06A/ R150F so from what I found, the gear ratio should be 3.91.

    This ain't easy to find.

I have found 1 front diff for 98 Tacoma with 3.91 ratio but it has automatic disconnect. I've seen on YouTube that this can work if I work a little magic on the automatic disconnect. Can I do that and will it work?

The other issue that was brought to my attention was in the first post of this page. According to the OP, I have an 8.8 inch carrier. If the front diff I found online to replace my current worn out diff is from an automatic transmission that would make it and 8.0. Would I still be able to use it as a replacement or would it be too narrow or simply unusable?

I have asked the question from the seller if the diff is from an automatic or standard transmission, but have not heard back yet.

I know almost nothing about this stuff except what I already mentioned so I'm sure I'll have many more questions if anyone replies to my posting.

Thanks, and I hope someone can help.

    Jim
