I have the Vessel in four? sizes starting at 0, or maybe 00. They're high quality- professional grade tools with quality steel and machining. I've never used the #3. #2 is the most common as has been noted.
OT, but there is also a Pozidriv screw that looks like a Phillips, but it's also different geometry. It has an "X" type symbol stamped on the head that crosses the recess.
The Phillips design is meant for the driver to rise out and or to strip the recess so that the screw doesn't break- it limits the application of torque. The Pozidriv geometry is the opposite and allows for more transmission of torque.

I ask the young man at the parts counter about a Japanese screwdriver, he ask if it were millimeter or metric

It does make a difference to use JIS. One is more likely to cam out and damage a JIS crosshead when using a Phillips driver than the proper-fitting JIS. The plus side is that JIS works equally well on Phillips (and better than a Phillips driver IMO.)

I use Vessel Megadoras running from 0-3 size. As they're not expensive, get them all and you'll be set for years. There's a motorcycle set from JDV/Vessel online that's a decent value and includes a good assortment.

Here's the MAF sensor on my former 2001 DC showing damage to the crosshead screw before I realized it was JIS. With the Vessel JIS driver it came right out.

Here's the second one where only JIS was used. Note the dot.

For most screws, especially random interior stuff, you can get away with Philips, but occasionally there will be something that is tight (Loctite, corrosion, etc) and having the correct JIS screwdriver will be a lifesaver.

Most of the time a #1 and #2 will do the trick, but a set or two that include #0, #1, #2, and #3 is probably not a bad idea.

Never had an issue. JIS screws which hold any bit of torque usually have a hex head anyway for you to put a socket on them. For other ones just put a dab of valve grinding compound on the screwdriver tip to increase traction - learned this from Eric at South Main Auto.

Thankfully Toyota isn't silly enough to put philips/JIS screws on brake rotors like some other automakers, but you can use a manual impact driver to take those out in most cases.

I have the impact one; they are really nice screw drivers and do work way better where applicable (totally worth $12). I got them for my motorcycles but good to know that they apply to my Tacoma too.

The ball handles form vessel are nice too.

I had no idea there was a different Japan style "phillips". I wonder if Japan is saying the same about us. Or not, since it seems the JIS works with both without as much issue. Anyone know why this JIS screwdriver exists, other than messing with us?

what I don't get about it is that even though Toyota itself is a Japanese company, I heard the Tacoma is designed by US engineers and made in the US
in that case, I'm not sure why they'd use a screw design from overseas (if they even do)

I *think* my gas cap screw was JIS but I'm not sure; I didn't know about the dimple identification at the time to confirm, and have since thrown away the old stripped screw after removing it, in favor of a cheap local stainless steel philips from a hardware store.

There are plenty of parts on a Tacoma from Toyota’s global supplier network. Just because it’s “made” in the US (“assembled” is probably a better concept) doesn’t mean all the bits are. See the Japan-made Denso MAF sensor on my Gen 1 in earlier photos as an example.

I got the Vessel Impacta in a couple sizes last time I was in Japan, it really makes a world of difference and the impact feature actually works. Unless I'm using it for that though I actually prefer the Vessel Woodys, they don't slip in your hand as much when they get covered in fluids. (read that however you want)

Also, I've found a lot of JIS screws that don't have the dimple. Beware.

Yessss, you will. Whatever you do, don't try backing the oil pump cover screws out with standard phillips driver on any Land Cruiser.

This is one of the reasons I use my Vessel JIS drivers for almost everything. They work better everywhere.
