I am told that Tacoma screws look phillips but are really JIS,
or "Japanese Industrial Standard" which is slightly different.

That being said, what tool has everyone used to turn these screws?
I heard the best one is a Vessel Megadora JIS screwdriver, and they're $10.

But I can't figure out exactly which one to get, because it looks like they have many. #2, #3, etc.
    whatever that means

Also, how often do you run into these screws?
I'm preparing to do a clutch job and am not sure if it will even be needed; though I think I acquired the rest of the needed tools so far (17mm and 14mm swivel sockets, etc.)
Then again, this seems like something Toyota might use in the interior, and center console removal might be needed for a clutch job.

My point though is, are these JIS screws even used a lot throughout the Tacoma?
Or is it just the gas cap?
    Because so far that's the only place I ran into it (and stripped it using Philips);
on the gas cap inside screw to install a Meso Customs Gashole.

It looks like "P3" and "P2" are both popular on Amazon

#2 is your standard phillips screw size. #3 is a bit smaller.

Phillips driver will easily strip a JIS.

This is how you id them:

I'd probably just buy a set of bits.

Yep JIS and Phillip's are different. The angles are different. I've never bought nor needed a JIS.

And to think all of these years I've gotten away with using the wrong screwdriver.

The only usage I have had for a JIS Screwdriver is when working on tiny notebook computer screws.

I've never seen one on a vehicle of any brand name...

You’ve made me want to go through jars of old bolts from old nissans and Toyota’s to see if I’ve ever had a JIS screw head. Something I never knew existed until now. Something that would’ve saved me time had I not learned of it. So, Thanks.

I found the jis screw on the back of my alternator the hard way. If they're not tight it's NBD to use a Phillips, but if they're 200k miles tight....it gets iffy.

I do recall running into a Phillips screw that none of my many drivers would fit. After the 5th or 6th driver, I did the hammer and sharp chisel trick to get it loose, then pliers to get it the rest of the way out, replaced screw with a bolt. It had a bulbous hemispherical shaped head.

New one on me. Thought I had about every fastener bit covered with the numerous bit sets I've acquired over the years. Have to look into it, thanks!

I never heard of the JIS dimple on the screw. Do all JIS screws have them? I've never noticed the dimple on motorcycle screws & I've worked on rice burning motorcycles for yrs. All have JIS, & I have messed up several JIS screws with phillips screwdrivers, but a phillips with an impact driver has always worked.

Never had too much problem with standard Phillips on Toyota. Honda motorcycles much prefer JIS tools though.

Phillips and flat head screws should be banned. Torx and socket head should be the only ones allowed :D
