3" Lift w/ 5100's and EMU 882 springs , General Leaf Spring and AAL in rear with 5100. Diff drop, carrier drop, 3 degee axle shims. Trail Gear Tube Bumper. Tundra brake mod.
I have new 5100's but using my original spring with 183k on them. Does not seem to be anything wrong with the old springs. I have a new trail gear bumper not yet installed and maybe a winch to go with it maybe 100lbs up front eventually. I only have the 2.7L engine so im thinking I dont need the 2883 springs. What setting to use on the 5100's? What do you guys think?

Im planning on progressive AAL in back which I also bought. Not sure where my rake will land.

I just installed 5100s front and rear with 880s and progressive add a leafs. Get the 881s or higher, 880s are pretty short.

881's if you want to stay the way you are. 882's if you plan on putting a steel bumper and a winch. 883 is overkill for the 2.7.

I’ll add that I have a regular cab stock, with a camper shell. I got roughly one inch of lift compared to my tired old springs.

Rastopher, I have an access cab stock and plan on adding 5100s all around soon. I was told not to use OME 880 (lift springs) with lift shocks.
Any issues with running these springs and shocks?

No worries using the OME 880/881 springs on first gen Tacoma with Bilstein 5100 shocks. On the front just make sure to set the shock perch on the lowest setting using the spring length to do your lift. My 881 springs set up this way have worked well on my 2001.

Well they certainly didn’t provide any visible lift for me. I would have got 881s if I could go back. That said, they ride nicely.

Why do you suggest using the 5100 in front set to the lowest perch?
Why use the springs for lift instead of the shocks?
Also, if on lowest perch and need more lift up front, what do you do then?

I have never done suspension work like this and am just trying to understand the reasoning here. Thanks for the help.

Using a higher spring perch compresses, or preloads the spring. Spacer lifts have the same effect. This makes for a stiffer ride and results in less available suspension travel. Ride quality and suspension performance are better if you use a taller spring to achieve the lift.

I might be able to help with this. I have an ext cab with the 2.7. I originally installed a OME kit with 881s and Dakar (no AAL) leafs. Was told this would be the ideal setup if I was not planning on adding weight to the front, which I was not...at the time.

    20200326_151909.jpg
This turned out to be ideal until... I added a TG front bumper/winch, GFC, 33s, and other random essential gear.
    20210627_205045.jpg

Lots of rubbing on trails and shotty ride. Next I installed the optional Dakar AAL, no more rubbing in the rear. This resulted in a decent rake and still rubbed in front. I then decided to install 882s.

This setup is perfect for me as far as stance and ride quality and I wish I would have opted for the 882s and AAL option from the beginning.

Thanks for the examples and input. Such a nice rig you got there and looks like you use it. How do the 882 fit into this because this is what I see.
    • OME 2880: Stock front weight.1.5 inch lift.
    • OME 2881: Stock front weight. 2-2.5 inch lift.
    • OME 2883: 200 + lbs additional front weight (heavy bumper and winch) 2.5- 3 inch Lift

If I can remember right, 882s have the same spring rate as 881s (500lbs) but are a bit longer (8mm which equates to ~1 inch of additional lift) to compensate for added weight. I was confused as well. I did a bunch of asking "uncle google" questions like 881 vs 882 and found that others with similar setups reported that 882s were the perfect medium between ride hight and ride quality.

I got the 880 with the 5100s and I’m happy with the stance. I’ll take pics later

When I had 31s, the 881s were perfect so if you are not going bigger maybe strick with 881s. As soon as I got 33s, I had substantial rubbing and applied several measures (pinch weld, inner liner cutting etc.) which helped. The addition of 100lbs+ front weight plus 25k miles, the front sagged. Some folks predicted/said 882s would be super stiff. Called wheelers (great customer service) and they said I would be fine and happy with 882s. The ride has been surprisingly good and better than expected.

Just bought the 5100 pair for 1-3" lifts and the 2882 springs from Wheelers. Also got some greaseable shackles and the stiffer exhaust bracket. Even got 15% off. I still have the Trail Gear bumper and Tundra brake upgrade in my garage. Next is trying to actually install all this stuff and to decide on better tires.

I have it narrowed to the stock 31" BFG K02 or Cooper Discoverer series but I think those were discontinued. Any other ideas on 31" AT tires?

Remember when you apply grease to the shackles to loosen the bolts. If you don't, the bushings will cup and will lead to failure. I had 31in ko2s, the best tires I have ever had as far as offroad capability and longevity, plus you can get them at costco and worked fine with stock gearing. I currently have Cooper stmax due to the limited options for pizza cutters (255/85/16). They are awesome!
