Did you purchase an aftermarket remote starter?

I paid the dealership $450(I think) to install a remote starter because I was told the truck I was purchasing, '21 OR, was not equipped with one.

I wouldn't be surprised if they installed a redundant starter. This was the worst dealership experience I've ever had. It's been over four weeks since I picked my truck up and I still don't even have my registration.

On a related note, I had an aftermarket starter installed in my '19 sport manual transmission because no dealership would do it. It was perfectly safe with the built in features and it did not turn off when the door was opened.

My 2021 TRD Sport with Premium package comes with the remote start as part of the package and nothing to do with the remote connect which I think is a rip off. I do not use my phone for any of the options offered by toyota especially the connect services.

The FOB will work if it is part of your package. Here is an example to know if your truck is remote start capable. 2020-2021 come with remote start.
When using remote start, it’s important to make sure that your Toyota vehicle has remote start capability. In order to remotely start your Toyota, press the lock button on your key fob three times. Be sure to quickly press the lock button the first two times, while holding the button for about three seconds for the third time.

12volt solutions has a plug and play kit for the push button ignition for @ $250 (when I purchased mine) still uses the factory fob.

I'd be interested if someone came up with in a hack or override so the engine wouldn't turn off when you open the door. Otherwise, I don't use it.

You had to purchase a remote start as I think your 2017 did not come with a remote start FOD in their package maybe I am wrong. You had the FOD for locking and unlocking doors but not remote start.

Correct, in case someone wanted to go aftermarket, instead of the dealer raking them over the coals.

I understand the dealer installed remote start is a rip off. I had aftermarket remote, navigation installed on my other Tacomas but this one came with them in the Premium Package.

So this seems to say that if you opt out of remote connect the fob will stop working but if you let the free trial run out it continues to work. Am I reading that correctly?

When I bought my truck the salesman insisted that remote start from the fob does not require a subscription. I didn't believe him. I guess I will find out in March.

it’s been a while since I drove a manual, but doesn’t the clutch have to be pushed down to start? The last manual I drove, I had to do this, even in neutral.

I was told this also from my dealer, and I’ll find out at the same time as you.

Regardless of having a remote starter, the "clutch start cancel" button does exactly that. It allows you to start the truck without the clutch engaged. I don't know if the starter utilizes this or not.

Either way, it had safety features built in to ensure the truck could only be started remotely if it was in neutral and the parking break was on. It also kept the doors locked to ensure it stayed that way.

I had a 2021 Off Road rental from AVIS last week and the 3 click remote start worked. Not sure what that adds into the Connected Services argument.

Any consensus on which company makes the best aftermarket remote start?

Seems like quite a few people dislike the safety mechanism that turns off the engine when the door is opened. I believe other systems use a different mechanism where the engine shuts down as soon as the brake pedal is depressed. Any reason why one safety (anti-theft) mechanism is superior to the other? With the door mechanism in place I’m guessing a thief could climb in through the window and drive off. With the brake mechanism in place I guess the thief can open the door if it’s unlocked or by other means and start driving without use of the brakes though they probably won’t get very far.

On a manual trans you bypass the clutch switch for remote start. Also don’t leave in gear and start it lol. Cars with keys will continue to run when you open the door. The push to start pretty much all turn off when the doors opened

I have the 2021 TRD Sport and the FOB works without a subscription. Subscription is phone users apps etc you can remote start from the phone. I opted out of the remote connect cause I do not use my phone like a lot of the people do. So no worry your FOB will still work.
