Any one ever heard of Trails End rd in Kerhonkson NY?
I saw it listed on a Jeep forum. Google map view looks promising.

This is one of my favorite places...Not sure which loop you did, but as summer goes on, the town will open up more gates. The roads go all the way to Cedar River Flow (great kayaking/hiking/camping), near the village of Indian Lake. You can easily spend a day back there just exploring, then three more days hiking. We go camping up there pretty much every year. Its primitive camping, and very very few people around. We have a favorite spot that is about 12 miles from the Limekiln lake entrance. Takes about an hour to get there from the gate pulling my pop up camper. Several people report seeing moose up there, I've never seen one, but have seen some bear back in there.

I think I've only used 4WD while backing the camper into a spot, up a hill. Usually the town does not open the roads until they are good enough to travel, so besides a few rocks sticking up, the roads are usually in pretty good shape. Especially for a Tacoma.

There are a couple other, similar places in the ADKs. Completely legal, and similar style roads.

I spent last Saturday in the area of the attached picture. My family owns some property in the area, so have been exploring it for a couple years now. There are a TON of state forests, very close together. All legal areas. Very few to no people around. We (me, wife, 6 Year old, 3 year old, 2 dogs) did a sweet 2.5 mile hike on the Finger Lakes Trail, then spent about 3 hours exploring the area. Found some sweet fishing spots. Most of the roads are similar to Moose River Plains, but some a much rougher. A few spots actually require 4WD.

Let me know if you want some more details on either ADKs or the State Forests, always willing to have anyone tag along. And remember though, this isn't "wheeling" with rock crawling and mudding. It's 97% exploring on legal, dirt roads that are easily passible with a Tacoma.

Ill be exploring Happy Valley Wildlife Management Area on Thursday afternoon. Have to go up to the area for work, and will probably have some free time.

Thank you for the reply! I’d love any info on the area you’re willing to share, and if timing lines up I’d be up to tag along sometime!
I’ve found the Moose River, Piseco/Prowley Rd, North Lake, and Vanderwhacker Mt primitive camping areas so far.

I’ve used Andy Arthur.org’s truck trail site to try to plot some areas to explore on my gps, but haven’t really gotten out to any just yet.

I’m up for legal exploring since I’ve just got a stock ‘19 OR with the stock AT tires. No rock sliders or aftermarket skid yet.

Did a little exploring in the South west Catskills today. Outside Ellenville and Neversink. I was surprised to find what seemed to be a legit motorized “trail” on DEC land.
Got dead ended into what I think are snowmobiled trails, a little tight for my rig. More to explore.

DEC further restricted these trails now you can only get to a turn around. No more trails. People keep using it as a free dump. Pretty soon there won't be any road access there.

I know it well. It's a 5 mile dirt road. It's got a few challenge sections but can probably be done in 2 wheel drive. There is hiking trails and a swimming hole at Vernooy Falls. You can camp in there also. Check out Lundy Road which is nearby. DM me if you need more info. I link it to a few other roads near Neversink/Claryville. It's the best i've got around the Catskills. Also good for plated dirt bikes.

Moose River Plains is a great place to explore and is one of my favorite places for a long week of camping. Just north of Lake Luzerne there is River Road which leads to Buttermilk Brook and an area referred to as the "Bear Slides". River road becomes a dirt road which has primitive camp sites along it, first come-first served. Along the road are numerous access points to enter the Hudson River, along with a sandy beach once you enter the camping areas. Approximately 8.5 miles down the road there is a seasonal gate which is typically closed November through April, although this year I found it open back in March. Beyond this gate, the road becomes a bit more challenging and is really 4x4 only. The road used to extend all the way to Lake George but has now become overgrown and is no longer maintained by the DEC.

Attached are some photos taken from both the road and the Bear Slides where my buddy is staring into the sky.

I spend each weekend in the ADK's and work in the Catskills right outside of Windham and would love some more ideas and places to explore. I will check through my list of places but I think you guys have covered most of where I've been. And yes, Andy Aurthor is a great source! Feel free to PM me if anyone is interested in meeting up and hitting some backroads.20190928_191842.jpg 20200517_010014.jpg 20200516_193752.jpg

My very first weekend my wife and I moved to the east coast in 2017 we explored all the seasonal roads around lake luzerne. The shirtless man, burning trash under a tarp hut stopped our progress

Don't listen to Bob. If there aren't signs saying no motorized vehicles beyond this point and its an open road (no snow, they are snowmobile trails in the winter) you can drive it.

Bob was probably the nicest guy in the world, just having a bad day.

message me if you're interested in trying to explore somewhere new and don't want go solo. I work in Hudson and live in Albany. My neighbor and I always get into some remote access roads during hunting or fishing excursions. Late winter is a ton of fun once you start getting into a little elevation. a bumpy dirt road in the summer can turn into a foot of snow and hidden washouts in the winter.

And a hefty ticket if it's a state groomed snowmobile trail and your caught by DEC during the season.
