I need a rear axle shaft for a first gen electric locking rear end/ABS. I'm not positive what year it is, but I think it is a 2001. I bought the rear axle second hand and I can't remember the year but I think all the electric locker axle shafts are the same.
I'm having a hard time finding one other than at the dealer (which is nearly $500). Low Range doesn't have them.
Does anyone have one lying around they would sell me?
Does anyone know where to get one?
I've checked the recycle yards and they will only sell the whole rear axle.
I'm located in CA between SF and Sac.
    Thanks

The first thing you should do is find the VIN of the truck, then call your Toyota Parts dealer. Give him the VIN and ask him to tell you what year your truck is. That way, there will be no questions when you do your shopping.

$500 sounds (to me, anyway) like an awful lot of money for a rear axle. When I bought a front axle for my TRD last December it was around $420 and included shipping (Genuine Toyota Part).

since the axle was purchased 2nd hand, the VIN won't help...

These are a few chromoly replacements I found just in a quick search: might be something to look into...

The first one of those is for non-ABS. I've found those no problem. The second one doesn't list whether it is for ABS or not (which makes me think it's not).
    Thanks for the try though.

Does anybody know what the difference is? Can non ABS shafts be used and it just forces you to delete ABS or what? Or are they totally different?

I know they aren't interchangeable, but I don't know why. I asked on an earlier thread and I was told that they would appear to fit and then they would fail (someone had tried it).

The ABS axles should have a longer shoulder to allow for the ring to be pressed on and then the oil seal. Not sure why they would fail if you tried using a non-abs unless the non-abs shaft didn't have enough shoulder to get the oil ring in the proper position.

At some point there was a transition on the design of the bearing shoulder on the shaft where it transitioned from a square shoulder to a rounded one. My only info on this is from experience with my 99 (abs, non-locker) having a square shoulder and an 03 (abs, locker) having a rounded shoulder.

Not sure if this can help but I used this axle as a replacement for my 99:

I suppose if the measurements matched with what you have (lenght, spline count, ect) and you used the proper bearing for the shaft it should swap in without issue. This is just speculation of course, good luck with the search

Does anyone know if/how the spline count differs?

I found that the correct axle for my truck has 30 splines. My truck is an '04 3.4L 4x4, but I have an E-locker rear end from an '02 or '03 DC (according to previous owner).

Good to know, thank you! Do you know if that PN is 4231135350, or if there are any other PNs with 30 splines?

The yukon chromos will work, but you need to use 95-00 wheel bearings.

Been running them in my '01 elocker for years with no issues.
