Expecting delivery next week - May 3. I'd like to have the frame sprayed with something to help prevent/inhibit rust. It's a little beyond my resources to do it myself, so where should I bring it? My mechanic? My body shop? A franchisee of an undercoating chain, like Ziebart?

So basically after years of working on tacomas since 2005, I can tell you, that undercoating doesn't work. The frames all rusted from the inside out, so they starting applying a wax inside the frame, yours has it.

Fluid film is encouraged as an alternative to undercoating. Depending on your location we can help you find a place that sprays it. You need to apply it every year or so, but its more effective than undercoat spray.

Lastly, wand wash the truck, and get underneath and wash it properly during the winter. This is a big requirement to ANY truck.

Most people will say fluid film. If you don’t want to/cant do it, maybe a local member would do it for a fee/beers?

I learned about fluid film here on TW. A quick google search and I found a local shop near me and had it applied for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I plan on getting a second application in October or November, just before winter, and annually from then on. A word of caution... it does have a strong smell and will linger for a week or so. Doesn’t bother me, but I can see that it might be off putting for some.

    Somewhere hot, flat and brown.
Just drive it. Odds are you'll either trade it or wreck it decades before it rusts.

Agree...drive it, wash it. Use a lawn sprinkler occasionally on the frame...you'll be fine.

Why do you need to do this to a new truck that hasn't been delivered?????

I suspect you'll be replacing the tires too.

    Oil/filter may need changing also.

Take delivery. Drive it. Once or twice a year, crawl under the truck to hose out the frame. DONE.

Krown if there is one near you. It’s a waxy type undercoating and they spray inside the frame rails, inside the rocker panels and doors, guarantee no rust from the window line and down. I disagree with the people saying you don’t need to do any rust prevention, depending where you live of course.

Fluid film works well. You can buy cans of it at Lowes next to the WD 40 or order off of Amazon. 4 cans is plenty. Spray everything. The nice part is that it keeps all the bolts in nice shape as well. My last truck a 2012 Tacoma with 200k miles in upstate NY was still in great shape and I could get all my bolts off without breaker bars.

Check the regional forums on here for where you live. Atleast around here in the NE there are a couple people that throw fluid film parties in the fall.

All you people who are saying "don't bother" are cute. Must be nice not living in the salt belt...and boring not driving on the beach.

If you put on some of that 3rd party coating, good luck getting frame warranty from Toyota down the road if you do have issues.

The rubber undercoating like Ziebart are trash. They cause more damage than doing nothing. You need a yearly coating of something like Fluid Film or Krown if you want to keep the truck long term. To the people saying just wash the frame off every little while- It must be nice not having to drive in liquid brine or salt 6 months a year.

Bar and chain oil thinned with kerosene or something similar. You can shoot it with an undercoating gun and it allows you to get into the vast majority of the passages in the frame.

Live in Eastern Canada rust belt and have used most available undercoatings including Rustcheck and Fluid Film. Fluid Film is lanolin based and has a peculiar smell that bothers some people and does not hold up as well as RustCheck. Had my 10 year old Tacoma in for rust preventative recall and service advisor commented chassis didn't need it but was completed anyway. Generally apply it annually in late fall for maximum benefit for winter rust season.
