Hi, I pick up my new 2024 next month and I'm thinking about going to 285/70/17 tires. I'll want a full-size spare but if it won't fit under the bed it'll need to go somewhere.

It might fit under the bed if you let a little air out of it. Just keep a mini compressor to air up with.

Would love to see this confirmed. I have seen it suggested a few times.

Someone on here posted a picture from another 4g taco forum of a 285 under the bed.

One thing to consider is that it will hang down really low but it does fit.

Probably have even more room if that last section of the exhaust is removed like the trial hunter axle dump

I installed a full-size 285/70 r17 under the bed. It fits. The tires are wider, but honestly, I think it kind of looks badass with the bigger spare. It may impact my departure angle slightly, but the tire is built to support the weight of the truck, and it might even protect my trailer hitch a bit. Definitely, it will get me home if I ever need it. Stock suspension and wheels, no mods to exhaust. Nitto Ridge Grapplers.IMG_1090.jpg IMG_1092.jpg IMG_1093.jpg

Unless you are a 5 tire rotation person, using a setup with a matching diameter but narrower tread might fit better

I looked into that. Do you have any suggestions for matching the diameter with a narrower tread? The closest I could find was 275/70 r17, but that is more than a half inch smaller in diameter and only 0.39 inch narrower

Pick 17". 32" diameter. Same diameter, 2" narrower. But that mostly comes in spare sizes, but it gives you some idea what the absolutely narrowest will be.

Unless you expect to need the full-size tire to get out of wherever you have your flat.

Looks like that size is only found in temporary spares. Tirerack has a goodyear one for $471 (gasp)
255/80/17 is close (10"w 33.1" d). Can find all-terrain versions. Looks like only in LT.
I think the way I'll go if I pop for 285s is to have a full set of 5. Keep the spare underneath most of the time. Just toss it in the bed if I'm going anywhere that clearance could be a problem. Then do 5-tire rotation and figure out how to deal with TPS.

how many inches of clearance do you think you have under the full size spare? might be a dealbreaker for me, it looks like it hangs really low, almost like 4-5 inches off the ground.

I measured it at approx 10.5 inches from the pavement at the lowest point. With the new 33 inch tires the diff sits at about 10 inches above the pavement, so the tire sits about 1/2 inch higher than the differential. You can see that the diff hangs lower than the tire in this pic. I don't think ground clearance is going to be impacted. However, departure angle might be.IMG_1096.jpg

It does look that way from the pictures! I was trying to get a good view of the tire. I posted a better angle to see the ground clearance. It's not as bad as it looks from the first pics.

With his suggestion you’d still have a full size spare.
