When you lend your car/truck to a family or friend ....

This applies to your Tacoma or any of your vehicles.

When a family or friend asks to borrow your truck or your car, the obvious things that come to mind to tell them are ...
    • Remind them to drive safely and obey traffic laws.
    • He/she is the only one allowed to drive the vehicle.
Then in my case, I ask that
    • the vehicle be parked away from other vehicles to avoid damage from thoughtless folks and
    • that they don't run the vehicle through a car wash. It's a nice gesture but car washes could potentially do damage to the vehicle's finish plus I actually like washing my cars. It's almost therapeutic. :)
I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. I may adopt a few from your input.

    Thanks.

    4 run, 2 don't
They only get to borrow my car if I trust them.

I don't believe I have to share anything noted above - if those doubts occur at all with that individual, they're not borrowing my car at all.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
    Family - may consider allowing.
Friends - depends on how well I know them. Usually the truck comes with a driver (me).
I no longer help anyone move. I'm too old and my body is beat.
Generally I do not allow friends to borrow vehicles or power tools or expensive hand tools.

The "obey all laws" makes me nervous. It is one thing to drive my truck into a ditch as a single-vehicle accident ... which is not good. Insurance implications are significant.

It is another thing for the person to run someone over and implicate me in the responsibility chain, especially if some bottom-feeding lawyer finds out I know that person likes to drink alcohol. Even if no one is injured during the DUI stop, the vehicle could be towed and I have to prove greater reponsibility to authorities to get it back.

I used to loan but I stopped years ago.
I had a beat up old F250 pick up.
It was beat up all over, a construction site truck I bought from my employer.
I splurged and bought a new tailgate and a friend painted it.
A few months later a trusted relative asked to borrow it.
He returned it with a huge bend and wow in the middle of the new tailgate.
He had loaded a power rolling tamper without completely lowering or removing the tailgate.
Not long after leant a garden rake to a different relative.
Returned with handle snapped off where handle used to meet metal.
    After those 2 never again.
No lending vehicles, tools or anything.
If need be I'll spring some cash to help with a rental if it's a close relative.

I've lent my truck and enclosed trailer to a friend to help them move. I left a person I'd never met borrow my motorcycle to finish the 2019 Iron Butt Rally when his engine blew on day 10 of 11. Ultimately it's a vehicle and can be replaced. It helps if the person you're helping is trustworthy and responsible.

I don't let anyone borrow my vehicle, on the rare occasion that i might loan it to my brother or other close relative, i need to see their financial records that prove they can buy me a new truck in the event of worse case scenario.

I loved driving manuals because so few people knew how so they wouldn't ask...

An important item you missed, because I wasn't aware of this until I bought the 4WD -

** Do NOT engage the 4WD system **

Then explain why because you know they'll do it anyway and start doing figure 8's.

No @#!$ing way I let somebody “borrow” my Tacoma, it don’t matter if they family, or friends. If was other way around, I would not borrow, too much BS drama, if something happens. Probraly would go to a rental company.

yep. it's a vehicle. not a priceless painting.

also, the only people that know me well enough to ask to borrow vehicles also know that if they muck it up, i'll use that event for my own entertainment value for as long as it entertains me, which can be far worse than adding stipulations and reminders.

Easy to say if you're in a good financial position.
Not so much if you lend something essential and damage is done to something you can't afford to rectify

    Borrow a vehicle, no.

I would offer to drive them if I had the time though.
