When did this trend towards Pastel colors start?

Seeing these pastel colors everywhere all of a sudden. There's Lunar Rock and that mint green shade and others for Toyota and bunch of Forresters and other cars are going pastel. Mavericks and Broncos and other Fords come in pastel colors, Cactus and Area 51.

Feel like I've woken in some alternate pastel universe.

Mfgs are always probing. If there’s a hint of blood in the water (money), they’ll squeeze all the blood out of that beet until it’s dry.

 

both neighbours on either side now have pastel subarus and I noticed several at Lowes and in the Ford lot nearby
Seems to have happened almost overnight. An invasion of the body snatchers thing.

 

I have Area 51 on the maverick it’s nice

 

Pastel colors started in the 1950s on vehicles. Everything cycles.

I ordered an Oxford White Ecoboost Maverick for my Dad a few months ago. Hoping to get it before next Christmas

 

My pastel black truck with pastel blue/purple theme graphics. Yes, pastels can be pleasing to the eye.

I for one am tired of all the drab dark colors and black wheels.
I don't know about pansy pastel on all vehicles but it would be nice to see things brighten up.

It’s was all done by the classic mini and other cars in the 60s / 70s

Was even a Lunar rock mini in the 60s and late 90s

I do like the non metallic colors…

Anything but the same old red, blue, black/white/silver/grey pallet is good by me.

Far more concerning how little variety there is for me ha.

 

Bought the dealerships order while ours was waiting to be built. Since we had one on order they allowed us to buy the first edition.

 

personally I always go white for practical reasons; work trucks and personal

I can see how the pastel colors would have similar benefits to white and silver but color matching and touch ups may be slightly more difficult.

Re: colors and how they are selected - I found an interesting article in C & D from 2016. If the article is to be believed, PPG lets manufacturers select from a color palette they curated then ramps up production so the colors that are offered this year were chosen three years ago. Again, if the article is to be believed. Never knew that. So all these greys that you see on Audis and high end pasta rockets (as well as the Taco), those grey tones were chosen back in '17 or '18 and became popular in 19' - '20.
