Happy advanced 4th of July folks. Ok so I'm now looking for a set of wheels for the Double Cab Prerunner Off Road and I have just one question.

What size wheel is the best for the truck. 16's or 17's?

Things that matter to us, in no particular order, are:
    Looks
Performance on and light off road
    Tire selection

15” methods fit and are fairly inexpensive.

15's for offroad, 17 for on-road, and 16 for something in the middle.

KOs are expensive and overrated now, but they were the tire to have about 6 years ago.

There's so many options for tires, and everyone preference will be different.

The weight of tires will also play an important factor (in my mind much more so than the "looks"

The 1st gen tacomas came stock with 15x7 or 16x7 wheels. The majority of people have 16” wheels. If you ever want to upgrade to tundra brakes in the front you need at least 16” wheels.

My truck came with 15s and I now have 16s.

This is good information as I would always like the ability to upgrade brakes in the future. Truck currently has 16's and will be staying with that size. The only issue is that the wheels my son wants only come in a 17". Will have to look for another style in 16's.

Little considered fact - the same brand and model tire will have radically different prices depending on size.

And a general observation - the 265/70R17 size, and other 17" sizes as well, have the widest selection and generally the best prices.

Try it for yourself. Shop by tire, and then enter three or four of the popular sizes for your truck. When I did that, it pretty much told me to stay in a 17" wheel.

If anyone has 17's on their truck can you all post a few pictures? Might have to go with 17's as the wheel style is important to us.

I kindly ask for pictures of 17" wheels on a 1st gen taco and I get a sales pitch with pics of a third gen. The post lends no help to my quest.

Mine with 16s, because I did the Tundra upgrade. Yokohama 275/265/75-16 Geolander tires on 16x8 Vision 84s with a one inch spacer to clear the brakes. Does rub a bit at full lock, going to have to work on that.

I like that look. Where do you rub at full lock?

Back corner of the fenderwell. I'll have to do a bit more "massaging" and it will clear, barely. A half inch spacer instead of the one inch would give me clearance as well, haven't tried that yet.

17’s are dumb on a truck that can fit 15’s.

Depends on what you are doing with the truck.
Off road more sidewall is preferable.
Highway driving you don't need a squishy sidewall, so less sidewall is fine.
Plus, what tires do you want to run?
Certain tires only come in certain sizes.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
Personally I believe 16s and 15s look best on these trucks. 17s don’t look terrible. But to me the proportions are off unless it’s got a 6” lift. Which in that case it’s already got enough problems
Personally I’m a fan of oem wheels.. the OG Toyota pickup 15s look amazing on 95-97 trucks. My 01 has TRD wheels from an FJ cruiser. 16x7.5. Plenty of options out there. 536C2FA7-C21F-4FD6-8B02-83204A8EC79F.jpg IMG_0833.jpg

    I agree!
It appears the OP doesn't like the advice that people are offering anyways.

I just purchased a set of wheels last week and there was more than enough information on this site for me to make an educated decision.

Honestly, nobody can tell him what wheels to get, what will rub and what won't. There's some trial and error involved here when exploring 3rd party wheels. Sometimes the trouble is worth it, sometimes it isn't.

For what it's worth, I'm now running 265/70/17 with only a tiny bit of rubbing (no lift)

I appreciate the collective opinions of the members and am taking it all in. I have also done an extensive search but it's not like there is one definitive thread with wheel size.

Would you be willing to post up a picture of your vehicle with the 17's on it. That's what I'm looking for.

    Heres my truck on 17s
    [IMG]
    [IMG][IMG]

I got 17s just because I wanted these TRD Pro wheels, so I didn't have much choice. I went with a wheel I liked more over a wheel-size I liked more.

If I were just buying any new off the shelf wheels and had the choice to pick size, I'd probably go for 15s.

All things equal I do prefer the big tire small wheel look, and have no intentions of doing the Tundra brakes.

    Tires are a 265/70/17

The 3rd gens are on 17s and 33s

Last pic also shows another 1st gen on 16s for comparison, I believe his tires were 265/75/16 @TACOTU3 ?
You can kind of see as you step away from the truck the 17" wheels do look a bit big for a 31-32" tire.
I think once I get 33s the proportions will be a bit better.
