I have some lightweight aluminum Raceline wheels on which the finish has completely degraded. I think the wheel would be worth refinishing at the right price. I planned on mounting some street tires for better mileage when I'm not adventuring offroad.

Is there anyone around Atlanta who will blast and paint wheels for a reasonable price? Most of what I'm getting through simple Google searches reveals pricing that's on par with buying new wheels.

I've read that heat cycling associated with powder coating will damage aluminum, but if that's BS, I'm open to that option, too, since it's a tougher coating. These are incredibly lightweight, like 18 pounds, so I do worry about doing anything that might weaken them.

    Thanks in advance.

Maybe searching the term 'bead blasting' would provide some leads for you.

Thanks, Bill. That got me a few leads to check on. I've gotten a quote from one of the shops that popped up, but they gave me a quote of $800. It's just not worth it for these wheels at that price. I'd just scrap 'em if that's the best price I can find.

ETA: Yeah, still getting quotes of 800 bucks. I guess I have unrealistic expectations.

I know this probably isnt what you're looking for but I had a set of wheels and sanded them down myself and plastidip them every 3 or so years. If they get dinged up off road I just peel and redip, which you can't do with finished wheels. Just a thought! Like to change it up every once in a while.

No recommendations on my end but I have refinished a few sets of wheels before. It's a venture that you usually take on yourself because it's not cost effective for these types of wheels. (It's a different matter when paying to refinish racing rims @ $1500/corner) then the price looks less unreasonable. If your not willing to rent a sand blaster or harbor freight it and do the work yourself. Maybe list them on the classified or run them like they sit.

I should probably do what auskip07 suggests and rent a sandblaster. The finish certainly doesn't need to be perfect. I appreciate the feedback!

I hadn't considered the possibility of renting a blaster. I probably have a neighbor or two with a big enough compressor to power one.

That is the other part of the equation. Most normal home owners don't have compressors that can put out the volume of air for this job. So you will need to take some time and it will put significant wear on a compressor.

I'm in auto collision and have sent a ton of wheels to Tony Hunter with Accurate Wheel Repair. He's based out of Loganville, but picks up wheels all over the place. Great dude, great business and great work. We have pretty fast turnaround on the wheels we sent off for curb rash, gashes, gouging, refinishing, etc. Give him a buzz and pick his brain on what you're looking to accomplish.
