I'm getting a winch in a few days and based on my research, wheel chocks are something to have available. I've been thinking of making my own from 6x6 or 8x8 wooden material but thought I would tap into the collective creative energy here before making a decision. Suggestions?

Nice. What is the material on the face of the chock against the tire?

Just 2x4s, cut to shape/length and screwed together. Did not sand them smooth so that helps.

I have rubber ones that stay in the garage (heavy).
The ones I carry in the truck are the metal folding one like these:

Mine happen to be Craftsman brand and have not failed me yet.

They can be had for $6 at Harbor Freight after their 25% off coupon this weekend. May require multiple trips if you want >1.

Many thanks for the suggestions here. I put this together yesterday afternoon and this morning. My goal was to use only materials I had on hand in the shop area so they are nothing fancy but should be functional.IMG-1803.jpg IMG-1804.jpg IMG-1808.jpg

Yes, they are awesome! But if they are anything like the Princess Auto ones (Canada's Harbor Freight) they stink....for years, really bad, like stink out the garage bad!

It’s a good DIY project, but I’d say, before you dive into cutting up some 6x6 or 8x8 wood, it’s worth checking out what’s out there in terms of pre-made options. Sometimes, the pre-built ones are made with materials that hold up better, like heavy-duty rubber or durable plastic, and they usually have that extra grip to keep everything steady. I’ve used a few myself, and they’re simple but super effective. Plus, they’re not too expensive, so you won’t have to spend too much time on a project that might not turn out exactly how you want. You can never go wrong with reliable chocks!

I had forgotten all about this post. I have a matching pair now but have not had occasion to use them.

Good post to revive. I’ve had some wood chucks my dad gave me that he made from discarded 4x6. I have HF rubber ones but I usually use the wood ones cause they are wider for my truck tires. They have started falling apart and I will make a new set out of treated 4x6’s. They ride in the back of the truck and come in handy as spacers, and when off-roading when parking on steep hills.

I bought a pair of rubber ones at walmart. $10 each. Used them under the front tires when installing an add-a-leaf to the rear suspension. Worked fine, I'm still alive
