Someone with a 3rd gen Taco can probably better confirm. Compared to 2nd gen Tacomas, I think 3rd gen Tacomas generally require a bit less trimming to fit "285s". This will depend on the tire (not all tires are true to size) and the alignment. The -25mm offset on the rims isn't going to do you any favors though.

I figured being 10 wide that I would have to move the offset, but I guess as long as the backspace is the same, I shouldnt have to offset? That is the disconnect I am having. I dont mind trimming the bumper, it will be replaced when funds (wife) allows

The offset is where the wheel's mounting surface is in relation to the wheel's center. The backspacing is the mounting surface to the rear of the wheel.

A 10" wide wheel with a 0 offset will have a backspacing of 5.5" (Add roughly 0.5" for the lip of the rim)

A 10" wide wheel with a -25 offset will have a backspacing of roughly of 4.5". The wheel sticks out approximately 1" more than the 0 offset.

As the wheel moves outward, the more likely it will rub.

When I first purchased my truck, I ran 285 / 70 17 and they didn't rub. I had a 2" lift at the time and was running the some procomp 36 series helldorado wheels (offset 18 with 5.25 backspacing). The 285/55 R20s are about the same size, (yours slightly smaller) than what I was running at the time. The 55s will not have much nearly as much rubber/sidewall if you plan on wheeling much. You may also be more likely to bend a wheel.

I find this ( ) a decent site to just . It may not help exactly with "what might rub" but replica9000 noted how the offset and such works.

I’m currently running LT285/70R17’s with a three inch lift on a 2015 taco. I’m wanting to go to a 265/70/17 tire. The current wheels have a 4.5” bs, with a -6 offset on a 8.5 wheel. I’m wanting to have the tires not stick out past the fenders. Can anyone tell me what I would need for a back space on say an 17 x8.0 wheel? Or am I just confused?!

OK I asked this on another thread to crickets so I’ll ask here. I’m trying to keep the topic in the wheels forum. If no dice I’m going to the gen pop with it.

Got a deal on some 17” replica pro wheels for cheap but they’re +30 offset…is that bad or doable for a stock off road mostly road driving? Haven’t done the deal yet but wanted your thoughts? Pretty new to the offset situation and I want a wider tire. Will this hinder that option? The wheels are 7.5” wide.

This is the only photo I have on them that maybe shows the contour of the wheel.

I drive a lot of highway on wet roads so I need surefooted tires of course but a wider stance wouldn’t hurt I guess. Not sure what to do at the moment but I got a killer deal on them and might grab them anyways and can always resell them. Supposed to go pick them up this afternoon. I’d appreciate some feedback if I’m shooting myself in the foot here seeing the shiny thing on the ground and picking it up lol.

I hate to revive an old thread, but I'm looking to verify my math. My current wheels are 8", 0 offset. My new wheels are 8", 508 offset, so less than 1/4 inch inboard?

I really don't want to kick a surely dead horse. But I have the chance to buy some 17×8.5 -10mm SCS Ray 10s. I currently have 17×9 -12mm KMCs XD am wondering what the backspacing is of the SCS rays and if they will be closer or further away from my suspension than my current wheels, is it possible to go from a -12 to a -10 while maintaining the same clearance
from the suspension. Any help is appreciated thanks!

The only suspension component you normally have to worry about having any rubbing would be the UCA when steering is turned at just the right angle and the tire is stuffed. and this is a difference of 2 mm so unless you are extremely close already there should be no issue

Our spec would tuck in about 8.5mm, but you would gain about 4.5mm in clearance on the suspension side. In short, whatever clears now will clear with our spec.

No problem. I reworded it a little bit to make it clearer.

Would a wheel that is 17x9 -25mm offset and a tire that is 265/70/r17 fit a stock Toyota Tacoma Without rubbing?

I currently have 8 inch wide wheels with -25 offset and 285 75 16s. I'm looking at going to a 8 inch wide wheel with 0 offset and maybe a 255 85 16 tire. I'm rubbing quite a bit with my current set up. It looks like the offset change would only bring the wheel in close to an inch correct? I wasn't really rubbing until I changed to aftermarket control arms. I'm sort of kicking myself because I read that would most likely happen. I needed new ball joints and thought hey here's my change to "upgrade" the arms. I'm a little concerned about wearing out parts due to the offset and weight. Plus fixing the rubbing. That's why I'm thinking about changing. So basically is it worth it?
