I recently upgraded from a 2007 DCSB 2WD Taco to a 2019 DCLB OR and am looking into getting into some off road action (needless to say, I'm an off road neophyte). While looking at things that I could use to protect my new love (i.e. skids, sliders) I could not seem to find a good answer for what an armored front bumper is for. Sure if you hit a deer or someone backs into you into going to save your truck, but from an off roading prospective the only thing I could think of is if you built out a rock crawler. So TW what am I missing?

side note: same question for the LED light bars - is there a legit off roading purpose or is just aesthetics?

Provides no purpose if you are driving down fire roads at grandma speeds. For those of us doing things a little more rocky they also provide a solid mounting for a winch.

As for offroad lighting... I seriously question how much use people get out of it, even question myself, and I'm pretty sure I use mine more than most.

I use my plate bumper to:

    1. solid mounting for winch
    2. push fallen trees off the trail.
    3. attach to for pulling other people out of where ever they get stuck
    4. as grab bars to prevent falling in the mud or snow when walking around the truck
    5. prevent body damage when hitting stuff

It is super useful as soon as the truck leaves a road (paved or gravel) and goes on a trail, or really off road.

    Thanks for the responses.
Sounds like one of the biggest reasons is just in case you run into shit out on the trail. With that in mind, do bumpers like the ADD Honeybadger (baja sytle?) offer all that much protection from running into tree and what not out on the trail or is it better to get something with full grill protection?
Also, how badly does a full grill protection aluminum bumper like the CBI Moab hurt your MPGs?

I have the bars on top of the bumper to protect my headlights, but sticks and other stuff still get in and do damage and scratch stuff. I even caved in the fender once because some limbs poked through the bars and did damage.

I didn't notice a MPG change when I put bumpers on. I got about 19 mpg when the truck was stock and I get about 15 mpg now with all the mods. The only thing I really noticed change the mileage with bigger (heavier) tires. Even now I have gotten close to 19 on long highway trips (down hill, with a tailwind, while drafting).

Approach angle, protection from bumping into rocks, trees, etc. especially on tight and narrow trails, multiple front recovery points, ability to mount and use a winch...there are many reasons to get an offroad bumper

As others have stated as well as being hit by or hitting/ pushing another vehicle: obstacle out of your way without damaging the “vitals” of your vehicle. You never know what kind of situation you may find yourself in.
I remember a train wreck emitting chlorine gas and people needed to ram gates to escape.
