So, I stopped by my insurance agent's office this morning to tell them I had a new bumper and winch installed on my Tacoma and ask what needed to be done to insure I had coverage for them. I had spoken with the lady at the front desk several times before on various matters over the years, so I knew she was not new to the business. She appeared to be late 40's to early 50's, so not brand new to the world either.

When I explained to her what I wanted, the first words out of her mouth were: What's a winch? I thought she was joking but she was not. Told me she had never heard of a winch in her entire life. I started to ask her if she knew what a "serving wench" was but held my tounge.

Fortunately, a lady in an adjacent office did know and things were squared away from there. Asked me what the cost was and said she would take care of it.

I just can't believe the lady didn't know what a winch was.

there's always more to what each of us don't know we don't know than what we do know, or even things we know we don't know.

my coworkers wife was mystified the other day when he was telling her about how i routinely stream radio stations from australia at work...

My surprise was that someone working in the automotive insurance industry didn't know what a winch was. I don't believe I'm the first policy owner to install a winch on a vehicle.

I am sure none of the women in my insurance office would know either.
It is really not that common.

Definitely not, but probably one of the few that wants to put insurance on one.

‘If you want it covered 100%. It’s an extra over stock equipment. It depends on what your policy covers.

Many years ago an empty 22 shell case got wedged between the trim and glass on the windshield of a 1985 Ford truck I had. It was near the bottom edge behind windshield wipers and went unnoticed. At some point I had been using the hood for a rest while target shooting. Over time the small piece of brass created a small chip in the glass which led to a cracked windshield.

I tried unsuccessfully several times to explain this to the lady at the insurance office. I finally gave up and simply said. My windshield is cracked, I think a rock hit it. She said, "Thank you." and put that on the form.

I have one better: my insurance guy didn't know what a Prerunner was, and he also drove a Tacoma. (Although to be fair, his was a 3rd gen when they killed the 5-lug and dropped the Prerunner designation for 6-lug 2wds).

Typing it out, it does seem complicated, lol.

A few years back a friend of mine had a policy like that .

He was hit by a woman running a Stop sign Her insurance Company dragged things out for so long the car being exposed to the weather ended up junk .

I can no longer remember the final settlement .

The best policy only covers the parts . Then each one is going to be different.

    I'll do you one better.

An ex of mine we will only speak of as the Sister of Satan was looking for a new (used) car. She called me up and said let's go look at this car, I like it.

    "What kind of car?"

    <pause>

    "A red one."

Insurance people should know what winching or a winch is. I have billed insurance co.s for extra winching on recoveries.

Whether far or near InsuranceCo is here!

Back in 2008 I bought a BMW 135, a brand new low-ish volume model in North America for that year.

I had issues adding it to my insurance because my company couldn’t figure out that the 135 was a real car that existed on US roads.

I think some of y'all are confusing someone who works a desk job, at a nondescript, boring company (insurance) with a car enthusiast.

These people didn't get into insurance because they like cars...

Agree. A lot of “Insurance” is about selling annuities and whole life policies.

yep, low volume enthusiast cars seem to always be that way. i had some of the same problems when i first tried registering my brz with my insurance. that was in january of 2014, of course the model didn't officially exist until 2nd quarter of 2013(with hype from 2011-2013). they took down the info, and said they'd call me back...
