Hi, My 2009 Taco 2.7 L , 2 wheel drive has a check engine light code for O2 sensor. My local Toyota dealer quoted $240 labor to install an $140 Bank 1 O2 sensor. He said it was 2hrs labor. Is that for real? Could I expect to get a more reasonable cost from another licensed mechanic elsewhere? (Not looking for a no-name repair shop where the mechanic may or MAY NOT know what he is doing.) Any experiences you can offer will be appreciated. Should I be shy to attempt the installation myself? Thanks

The cheapest stuff is always the most expensive. That being said. You can always find somebody to do it cheaper. But make sure it's a denso or oem sensor. Toyotas don't like cheap sensors.

Installed Overhead Compass and Temperature Display along with outside temperature sensor and wiring; LED lights reverse backup; LED license plate lights; Added GTA Bluetooth Audio kit to stock radio for iphone audio; Spare tire steel braided air hose extension connection to rear bumper; Installed new headlights along with new bulbs PIAA H4 XTreme and for fog lights PIAA H10 XTreme bulbs. Installed new hood with "hood-scoop". Installed Predator Side Steps. Replaced front chrome grill with customized color matched (Desert Sand Mica) grill with added TOYOTA lettering (also in matched color), installed and secured tailgate anti-theft devices. Also installed a new external TPMS monitor for all 4 tires.
    You can install it yourself.

Plus the fact that you will be saving a lot of $$$.

Just take your time and have patience and while your at it I would replace the other three (total of 4 sensors, 2=O2 Oxygen Sensors and 2=Air/Fuel Sensors) at the same time because if one is going out then it's only a matter of time that the others will too.

But WAIT!......are you positive that it's the actual sensor that is the problem and not the catalytic converter that is the "real problem"?

If the catalytic converter is going bad your O2 oxygen sensor will start failing causing the code for that reason.

Something to think about before actually proceeding.

Because if you do replace the O2 oxygen sensor and continue to receive codes for a bad sensor then that implies that your catalytic converter is going bad or is already bad and that in itself is expensive to replace.

Here in Texas there are any number of Auto supply Stores that will do free Diagnostics with a plug and play scanner. Just ask, they can also provide OE type sensors, all warranted the same. they can
also provide, sell or rent you the proper tool to replace this 02sensor.
    Best of luck

In the v6 motor 1gr-fe there are also air fuel ratio sensors. Those suckers run over $200 a piece for just the part. Not sure about the 4 banger. Hopefully it's just an oxygen sensor and if that's the case pick up a dedicated socket and spray wd-40 on it the night before. Unplug wire harness and go to town. Easy job. Unplug your battery just to be extra safe. Doubt it would hurt anything either way. Also pick up a Bluedriver or something comparable to read codes and give diagnostic information. Good luck.

    o2 sensors are STUIPID easy.

Unplug one plug, and use an open end wrench to spin it out of the exhaust.... easier than a sparkplug. take maybe 10 minutes including finding the right size wrench out of your toolbox.

But yes, go to a local autoparts store, get the exact code its throwing and report back. Its probably an 02 sensor heater circuit which is common to go.

And if you do fix yourself. do yourself a favor, grab a can of some penetrating oil, and when you park your truck for the night spray some on the bad o2 sensor to loosen it up, then the next morning before you drive, replace the sumbitch and call it good.

2 freaking hours of labor for an o2 sensor is robbery. Fucking dealerships.

That is not a diagnostic they do. That's a code scan. 2 different things.
