I've successfully changed the startup image in my 19. However, the image is only visible for a fraction of the time as the stock image for some reason. Reverted back immediately as the result was lackluster. That said, here is the procedure:

Take an empty USB flash drive and create 2 folders titled:
    • StartUpImage
    • DisplayOffImage
Load up images with an approximate resolution of 1280x720 into the desired folder and plug the USB into the truck. Once it is plugged in, you will then have to do the following:
    • Press the ‘Apps’ button > Setup > General > scroll down to the bottom > select customize start-up image/screen off image.
Once you have got to the startup image/screen off image customization tab, go ahead and select transfer.

Once you select transfer you will receive a notification asking if you want to “overwrite the current images?” Select yes.

Don’t worry about overwriting the default images because they will always stay backed up in the head unit.

After you hit yes, the system will copy the USB flash drive files to the head unit display. Once copied it will show the 3 images you uploaded to the flash drive.

Select the image you want to display, and then press OK. Once that is done, you have successfully changed the startup/screen off image.

    Good luck!

    Nothing major yet.
It worked on my 2019 off-road so I’d assume you should be able to do it. I think 2016-2019 should work. I don’t know what year second gens it works on, but I believe it works on the later ones that aren’t base models.

I believe your image has to be a certain size. I forgot the dimensions though.

your USB drive has to be FAT32 format, stick them in your computer and check the format.
the name of the files have to be exactly what the instructions say.
pic size can't be larger than as what was stated in a previous post
i think around 2020 is when you can't up load pic's to the head unit.

    Kefka,
I have watched 4 different youtube videos on this and have followed instructions to a "T" (except my sizing was only 720 x 720) and get the same message after hitting transfer. I figured that smaller size would be no big deal. I can't find in the owners manual about file types supported. I did try changing the .jpg to .jpeg. neither worked

Not to high jack this thread, but does anyone know if you can change or add pictures in the 2022 head units?
I thought if they do and are plug and play for a 2020 that I might change units.

Everything I've seen says that they can't be changed on 2020+ models.
    Much to my disappointment.

That sucks! I saw a YouTube video on how to change the startup image, spent 20 minutes finding a good image/resizing and then just tried to upload it. Immediately came here to find out why I couldn’t. Why would they take this feature away? I have a 22 OR.

Not worth the effort to maintain a feature that next to zero owners utilize.

    Oh look, another mod....
They did it so members on Tacoma World would have yet ANOTHER thing to bitch about when discussing their trucks.
