I have a cracked block and need to do a motor swap. What years work with the 96?

It depends more on what will work with your current transmission. Or do want to change both?

Depends how involved your swap can be.

Easy is the same year same transmission.

After that swapping the engine harness and sensors to the engine going in.

Not all 3RZ are the same so that list doesn't really help OP.
You need a 3RZ with a distributor in order to be a direct swap that's plug and play. If it's out of a T100 then you need to swap oil pans and the dip stick.

I want to say that the Tacoma and 4Runner 3RZ's should be identical from 95.5-96 and what ever isn't exactly the same you can swap from the old motor to the new. For a 94-96 T100 3RZ the differences that are easy to spot are going to be the location of the oil dip stick which is on the driver side of the block instead of the front and the rear sump oil pan. If you get a T100 3rz you can just swap over the dip stick oil pickup and oil pan from your 3RZ and it will be the same as what you already have.

As long as it’s within the year of yours you’ll be fine I got a jdm motor 3rz to replace my 3rz and it had the distributor hole for me which I needed but also had the camshaft sensor on head. So it must of been a coil pack before then turned into distributor. Either way I made it work not that hard

I got mine from Yota1 but it's worth looking into the local wreckers, it'll be cheaper and faster.

If it was me, i'd create a WTB thread on here and see if any members have one they'd sell you. My experience with wrecking yards hasn't been good.

Members on here are more trustworthy and you generally have a better idea of what you're getting than if you go to a junk yard. Buying from a junk yard is a shot in the dark imo

This varies by location but it holds true for any motor you buy on Ebay too. US or JDM.

Main thing is don’t buy online you want to see in person. I went with jdm I was told good and bad things but mostly good. I checked the inside and around the motor was very clean. Some jdm places will even do a compression test for you

This is why I went with a genuine Toyota rebuild from Yota1. They're an experienced machine shop in Modesto and specialize in Toyotas. I didn't have the time or space in my garage to do my own rebuild. I was happy with what I got and all I had to do was swap motors and send mine back as a core.
