I'm renting a truck (smaller - not Ram, etc) from Hertz in a few weeks in Palm Springs & wondered what sort of trucks they provide. The site reads Nissan Frontier or similar. Always gotten Tacos from Budget (they list Tacoma or similar), but their site & app kept blowing up on me when checking out. Was hoping to get a new Taco to try out, but it wasn't meant to be.

What have y'all gotten for trucks from Hertz?

They used to have Tacomas but I think they sold most of them because I’ve seen a few on their car sales lot. Doubt they have 4th gens.

Take what’s on the website with a grain of salt though. My wife and I one way rented from them from Orlando to Miami and back for a cruise so we could leave the truck and our cars in the garage and I specifically picked a Corolla off the website.

Ended up with one of those fkn Kia’s that the mouse drives on the commercial. Biggest POS I’ve ever drove, 3700 rpm to do 70-75 mph, I thought it was going to detonate. Thank God they had a Corolla for the drive back home.

I wound up with a Kia a few years ago that I drove from Colorado to Nashville & really liked it. It was pretty much new, so that probably helped.

Worst rental I've had is a few years ago in Nashville - Christmas day. Was supposed to get a 4-runner and wound up with a Silverado crew cab. Also almost new & a rotten, lousy POS right out the gate.

Cool - maybe I'll get a g4 Taco! I'm cool with the Frontier too - been wanting to try one. Hoping I don't wind up with a Maverick, but kinda wanna experience one of those too. I'll probably be cool with whatever they give me as long as they don't pull out a vintage Luv or something :)

Soooo, this is the cheap truck. 3500 miles. Wtf lol. $45/day all in. No special deals. Wasn't ready when I showed up, so I offered to take something else. Somehow this was the cheapest offering & something like a Corolla was gonna be a price upgrade. I don't get it

I bet you that Corolla is more expensive because it has better fuel economy. I travel for work a lot and normally rent from Hertz. We are required to rent a compact car, but almost every time I book my rental, the compact is significantly more expensive than midsize, full size, trucks, etc. I think folks want more savings at the pump when renting, and the rental car companies know it.

Also, a note about Palm Springs; they typically have a lot of 4x4 trucks and SUVs for rent because of its proximity to Twentynine Palms, Joshua Tree, etc. I've always gotten some nice, free upgrades when renting from Hertz there.

Makes sense. I blew off plans to drive around aimlessly for a day or 2 on the mileage part. So far anyway. I could still get a wild hair, but there's a lot to do close by.

It's not all bad though. Alpine branded, this is the best stock audio system I've ever heard. Hands down. Needs sound deadening though...it can boogie (for OEM) & gets rattly at higher levels. Imaging / staging is crazy good. Interface sucks...awful lot of lag for a new truck.

Handles 60 mph crosswinds well...unexpected bonus. Handy as it's like 8 feet high. Keep that number handy. 8ish MPG is lolwat and I don't drive fast. Drives like a dump truck...super stiff. If they'd put me in charge of branding, I would have called it the Boneshaker edition. Probably tows like a champ tho.

Honestly the more time I spend with it, the more utilitarian I find all the space. I don't see ever buying one of these unless I get the trailer bug. But since I don't have to do a ton of driving on this trip, I'm kind of enjoying it. It's wide open spaces out here & this beast fits right in.
