I'm currently piecing together some tools to keep in the tacoma for any road/trail side repairs I might have to make. Since this list could be insanely long, I'll stick to sockets and box/open end wrenches. Here's what my mobil tool box has...

    -3/8" drive socket wrench
    -3/8" 3" extension
    -3/8" 6" extension
    -3/8" shallow sockets in: 10mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm
    -3/8" deep sockets in: 10mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm, spark plug socket
    -1/2" breaker bar
    -1/2"-3/8" adapter socket
-1/2" sockets in: 19mm (lug nuts), 34mm (axle nut)
    -Open/box end wrenches: 10mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 17mm, 19mm, 22mm

Did I cover all the fastener sizes with what I currently have? Any other size bolt heads on these trucks that I'd have to unfasten if broke down? I know that's a very vague question.

Are the transmission and t-case plugs 22s? I think there's at least one 24mm on the 3.4 if it has an oil cooler. It also seems I've run across a few 8mm bolts, and you need the SAE sockets to open hose clamps (1/4" maybe?) - there are clamps on radiator hoses and the fuel filler neck hoses. I also like to carry line wrenches in 10mm and 14mm for brake lines and fuel lines.

You'll want a 24mm for drain and fill plugs. I keep an adjustable wrench for those just in case unexpected bolts too. You'll want a 24mm socket as well because you cannot reach the rear axle drain bolt with a box wrench. I have a truck tool case as well, and I filled it with harbor freight stuff to avoid being devastated if someone were to steal it. Don't wanna lose my Snappys to a theif, but you can find the sockets that are larger in a onesy twosy selection from them or get them from AutoZone for cheap as well. Just something to keep in mind, no one wants to lose their good tools. I may take some pics of whats in mine since it needs to be reorganized.

Thanks for the replies! Yes, I'll toss in a 24mm socket as well. My box contains mostly duplicate craftsman and a few cheap oriellys sockets. Harbor freight for the box end wrenches.

I can never figure this out Why do people put there low quality tools in vehicles ??

If I have a failure that can be repaired I want the best tools I own to work on it.

If it can`t be fixed it gets a ride home.

Unless you know that the last owner was decent and didn`t remove and install all the hardware with sae tools that were close enough one of the best things to have is The Irwin Sockets for rounded hardware.

I bring my high quality stuff if I'm going on a road trip or wheeling trip, I leave the HF stuff in all the time. Not worth losing my good expensive tools when I could have the truck towed with my AAA if the HF stuff gives out. I have doubles of things that are likely to break like ratchets and pliers. For the most part if I'm busting off HF tools it likely wasn't a repair to be done on the side of the road. That's why I bring the good stuff for big trips.

That's a lot like my good set, but I have stubby and thin service style ones worked in there at popular sizes like 10,12,13,14,17

Hmm, I dont know if he has enough 10mm there.

But yeah 10mm seems to be the divinely ordained staple of Japanese cars.

I have one of the largest tool kits that Craftsman makes that fits in a blowmold carrier. Buy a kit and always keep it in the truck.

Bringing up old stuff here again...can anyone confirm this? OP says his are 19mm, do they vary by year/trim?

Also, I'm gonna throw in that you may want a 17mm crowfoot (for a meager one time use as a regular Joe) for the fuel rail banjo bolts (torque: 25 ft. lbf), if any crickets are still about reading this.

Now I have never seen a 5 lug Tacoma close up but all the lug nuts I have take the 21mm socket even the ones on the Celica`s before they went front wheel drive
