What size plank fits in the bed slots?

Just curious if anyone knew off the top of their head what size piece of wood fits into the slots in the tacoma bed (2nd generation).
I thought it was 8 inches ( 2x8) but am too lazy to go out in this rain storm to check.

1X8 if you want it flat.

 

2x8 - cut them just the other day. If I recall, they were 57" long.

 

Woah, you're supposed to put something in those slots in the bed sides? I thought they were just wierd storage pockets? Anyone got a pic of this with a plank?

 

No the planks don't go in the pockets. There are rectangle cutout in the sides of the bed that allow you to put a 1 or 2 by 6 in them, which allows you to create 2 levels in the bed.

 

I am using 2x4 cut to 57".

 

A 2X6 is a bit too narrow to completely fill the width of the pocket. Mine slide around on my '13. FWIW, I also added a secondary tailgate cable attachment point that holds the top of the tailgate at the same height as the top of the boards. Use 2 fender washers to sandwich the bed side and hold in place with two nuts. Works great when hauling sheet goods.

Indeed, great idea. I'm running 2 2x4's also at 57".

 

I use a scrap 2x6 cut to length. I use it in the slot near the tail gate. Holds 5 gallon gas tanks in place perfectly.

 

The secondary tailgate cable attachment is genius.

 

I've had 8' sheets of drywall in my bed a few times and I'm embarrassed to show off the contraption I made to support the last few feet. The secondary cable idea is brilliant.
