so i swapped my steering rack a couple weeks ago for a new oem. the old rack leaked slightly from the seals under the boots. a part of me wants to keep it incase i want to rebuild it. it worked fine. it just leaked. maybe i rebuild it and sell it? my original lasted 325k and 20 years. I'll likely not put that many miles on it in the next 20 even if i keep it forever. but in 20 years finding original Toyota racks will be nearly impossible i imagine. even now some parts are becoming unavailable from Toyota.

i don't want to just throw it away. any ideas?

It houses fluid (meaning it can slowly leak), has little value currently and rebuilding them is expensive and not worth while.

    Garbage.

maybe not professional but seemingly effective. i realize the inner tie rod ends are a huge cost but if they need replacement i might just go aftermarket. since it's current fate is the trash anyway, it's a low stakes thing to try on Saturday afternoon. the seal kit is between $20-$40. i might just tear it apart first to see if i can, then buy the seal kit. i can assess it from there.

It is up to you I have a collection of parts I thought to good to just throw away like in your case.

Many I have the needed parts to rebuild here they sit some longer then 20 years .

In my case it never fails when I needed something I needed it now or forgot I had something I could put together to work

If you live in a city of any size, you can lay it out by the alley and a scrap metal scavenger will smell it in a week or so. Maybe bait it with a trail of aluminum cans from a main roadway.

JK. I try to keep stuff like that at least a few years, then make a trip to the metal recycling yard every so often when the pile gets stale. At least you get a little money back for it and the metal gets re-used.

People keep asking if they can haul my scrap away.

Then I never see them for months they ask again seems to just keep repeating
