So I just a 1998 Toyota Tacoma regular cab for my fist truck that my parents gave me. I want to make it a light/medium off-road vehicle and I was wondering if I should even make it off-road compatible and if so what should I get?

If you can wait i would recommend saving up and trading in for a pre runner ot actual 4wd. The 5lug options are limited

your parents gave you a great gift. keep it stock. save your money. this thing will run forever with basic maintenance. very easy to work on, so learn what you can! if you want an off road toy buy a dirt bike or 4wheeler and that little taco will happily tow it around. in 10 years you can retire that truck as your beater and buy a new tacoma lol

Congrats on your truck. You will want to get a limited slip rear end because the stock one is open diff. That will help your traction offroad. And since you will have to change rear gear ratios for larger tires you can add the eaton lsd at that time. If it's an auto trans a340e you can also help it and get an auxilary fluid cooler since your gonna need a lift and bigger tires to push around. Also once you add more weight or beef it up you might need to up the power a bit. You need to find a suspension lift so you can fit some big tires. If your gonna go for a mild offroader you dont need to be 4x4 etc. You can play with what you have and make it your own. But I dont know about high offroading at all. lol My 98 is lowered some. The 2.4 lacks a little at the low end.I cant tell you that if you want some better power straight up you need to get the Lce longtube header for yours. It will feel torquier down low. It will help offroading. The best would be to supercharge it to get it more grunt.
