What parts make up 15% of the Japanese parts?

    Hi everyone!

I just bought a 2022 Tacoma and love it so far. I loved the quality of my 2006 Frontier that had many Japanese parts and was curious what parts make up the 15% of Japanese parts that I think I read somewhere that is used to assemble 2022 Tacomas in Mexico. I keep my cars a long time and will be curious to see if the parts like Denso alternator that is now made at their factory in Mexico really lasts as long as the old Densos. I also noticed Hitachi made the shocks for my 2022 Tacoma but it too was made in Mexico, not Japan like the old Hitachi parts like on my 2006 Frontier.

Are the 15% of the Japanese made parts in our 3rd Generation Tacomas just small switches and sparksplugs or did we get any major parts made in Japan like maybe the power steering pumps or something like that? Is it the expansion valves for the AC or the compressor itself? Etc....I saw the CareCareNut video on Youtube that explained that even though Japanese owned factories in Mexico or North America in general should have the same quality, I would like to know what parts on my Tacoma were made in Japan to see how it holds up like my very Japanese 2006 Frontier did.

    Thank you!
    Rick

    Thank you very much!

That is a great list but it covers all Toyotas for the world I believe and will not help us know which parts that we have in Tacomas made for USA make up the 15% of Japanese parts. But this is a great list so I appreciate it.

I wonder if because 3rd Generation is only 2016 and after, not many people have really been into their cars replacing parts so they just don't know yet? I slowly discovered from having my 2006 Frontier which parts came from where by working on it myself. Like I was saying, I noticed the starter, power steering pump, alternator, the major brake parts/lines, and many other things were made in Japan. I would imagine it was the same for the earlier Tacomas. I was at first surprised to see so far under my 2022 Tacoma that nothing so far that I could tell was made in Japan. Denso has a factory in Mexico and I guess Hitachi does now too based on what I saw (shocks were made in Mexico by Hitachi and Alternator was made in Mexico Denso plant).

I guess worst case scenario, the 15% of supposedly Japanese parts that we have in our 2022 Tacomas are indeed just electrical switches and relays or something?

Yikes. I posted this 6 days ago and no one knows a single part that was made in Japan on 2022 Tacomas? I am starting to conclude the 15% that they says is Japanese is indeed just switches, relays, and maybe some wireharnesses or something? Or could that 15% be parts like this..... While the Denso alternator is now made in Mexico plant, the rectifier and regulator parts are made in Japan and then the Denso plant in Mexico winds the alternator and assembles it?

The 2.7L engine used in a small portion of Tacoma trucks is still manufactured in Japan.

Thank you for the reply. I've seen the websites that kind of say that but it's totally confusing. The websites say the engine is made at Kamigo Plant (implies Japan) but in the same sentence says Indonesia as well! So it's very confusing. They way it's written I don't know if it means some engines are made completely in Japan and some completely in Indonesia. But there's another possibility. I wonder if the Iron core is cast in Indonesia and then the engine is assembled and finished in Japan? But are all 2TR-FE's (which is the engine I have) made the same way for Tacomas which are only for North America?

I suspect (but can not confirm) that all these 2.7L engines installed in North American Tacomas are machined + assembled in the same Japan plant (likely using a cast iron block from Indonesia as you theorized).

I doubt you’re gonna get a clear answer on here about your 15% question. But, Toyota’s been making Tacomas in Mexico for the last 18 years now, and have always been able to maintain their quality standards, so I don’t think it’s anything to be concerned about. If you maintain your 3rd gen and treat it well, you’re going to get a couple decades or more out of it.
