"TBN" is total base number. It is an actual base added to counter the acid collecting in the oil. The acid mostly comes from; the sulphur in the fuel getting past the piston rings - and then mixing with the water (a by-product of combustion) which is also getting past the rings. The combination is sulphuric acid and it plays absolute hell on babbitt! Obviously the high sulphur diesel fuels were horrific at causing this acid and so, the quality diesel oils would have a TBN of 12.5 or better!
Water will also result from condensation.

Detergent, translated means "to hold in suspension", and it is a property definitely formulated into all synthetic oil. It is consumable and you are right to keep track of it.

As far as your question, I would be wary of any no-name brand oil going the distance. They can buy the API rating, unfortunately.
I take my oil out to 36k miles, but it isn't one of the "cheapy entry-level" types.

I like using OEM or OES oils. Idemitsu is my current favorite.

    Still thinking about it.
I'm in the camp that "it doesn't really matter". And I say that because of a couple of guys I know with old 22Rs that just don't care, they never change the oil and the trucks don't seem to care either, as long as there's something on the dipstick.

However, that's not me. I was wondering if any of you guys know about Napa vs. Valvoline. I know Valvoline makes the stuff for Napa, but is it the same? Is Napa full synthetic the same as Valvoline full synthetic, in a different bottle for 30 percent less $?

BITOG users have some opinions on this but I haven't seen anything 'concrete'. Some say yeah Valvoline packages it but with a different additive package. I'm just curious.

I use Napa full-syn 0w20 and a Platinum filter because my company gets a healthy employee discount there and I can do quality services for cheap!

    eBay case pack for $40. I think it’s 10 or 12 filters.

I'm gonna shill Amsoil because they actually post test results of their oil and they have been at the 100% synthetic oil game for so long without trying to call market synthetic blends as "full synthetic" in order to save money. Yes, their marketing is complicated but they are small beans compared to all the name brands that are on every store shelf. I like knowing I'm not supporting a huge multinational corporation that is primarily concerned with profits.

    Fundamentally flawed argument.

TBN doesn’t typically decrease linearly. See also: ashless detergents.

Anything you mentioned from warren distribution (Kirkland, ST, etc) will be perfectly suitable for your vehicles OEM recommended OCI.

It literally doesn’t matter. Pick the bottle/design/brand/color that you like best. Make sure it meets your manufactures specs, and don’t worry about it ever again.

For some people there will always be a stigma attached to private label brands regardless of how much info is available. Much like everyone knows someone's brother's cousin's friend whose Mustang blew up using a Fram filter. Simple truth is, an oil like ST, Amazon Basics, Meijer brand (all produced by Warren) and just about any "generic" oil, synthetic or conventional, will provide you all the protection you need.

And for the Fram haters, the Fram Ultra is, bar none, the best oil filter you can by.

If my argument is flawed then the entire commercial industry is doing it wrong as they use TBN to tell them oil life... You go school them.

Perhaps you've never seen a sequence VG test where the TBN and TAN cross... That's when your oil dumps all the sludge in your engine. But of course do whatever floats your boat.

BTW ashless detergent doesn't provide base. I used to formate engine oil.

Nothing to do with stigma I'm just trying to figure out how long a cheap oil lasts. I don't test those out to 10k so I don't know.

We never spent much money proving out low end stuff beyond the standard 5k.

    And now a fundamental misunderstanding.

Yes, TBN below a certain number can indicate oil life, but TBN doesn’t decrease linearly - so back to my original point - a “low” starting TBN doesn’t necessarily indicate an oil with a short life. My crack about ashless detergents was meant to emphasize that TBN isn’t the end all be all of oil life - not only because of the way TBN reacts to use, but also that TBN won’t capture the full add-pack.

I don’t need to lecture the oil industry - minor players like ExxonMobil already publish their same findings on the topic.

The problem is the end of oil life is exponential as you said. Hence my question has anyone run this stuff 10k without issue.

I'm genuinely curious as engine tests are purposefully severe and not like real world. Do you run 10k on cheap stuff?

I have run Chevron Havoline ProDS at $18.97 for 6 quarts for 10,000.

    That’s approaching supertech pricing.

Modern name brand or quality blenders like warren will be fine for your Vehicles OEM OCI. It’s entirely vehicle dependent.

A Honda 1.5T is going to dilute ANY oil by 3-5K. The 1GR-FE or a ford modular is going to run on baby oil if you want (kidding).

Modern synthetics (all PCMO’s really) are spectacular performers.

Use the OEM OCI recommendation and then get testing done from there if you want to extend an OCI.

    I have '15 Prerunner i4 2.7 DC SB Auto.
Just turned 160k miles as of Feb/2020.
Always did self oil change with 0-20 Mobile 1 full synthetic labeled for toyota/honda - always at 10k miles!
I use mobil 1 oil filter for full synthetic.
So, i have only done 16 or 18 oil changes in 160k miles.
I usually let oil drip out all night when draining - just for my satisfaction.
Never had any engine issues, everything is still original!

Thanks that's what I wanted to know. The pro ds is also a 7.4 TBN oil. I was never sure if they'd last 10k but now I do

That's pretty impressive for such a teeny add pack. They use only about half the additives a good oil like mobil 1 uses.
