Happy Saturday fellow Tacoma owners. 1 month ago I received confirmation that my rear passenger bearing was going out (the symptoms were the typical loud noise at low speeds). the quote I got was for $1,000, parts & labor, just for one side. I think is on the high end just for one side. I priced the OEM parts and a Koyo Hub/Bearing and I can get them all for less than $250. I don't see how the labor can be $750. I'm in the Charlotte area and if anyone know of any trustworthy mechanics that wouldn't charge an astronomical price, please let me know.

Rear wheel bearing is very labor intensive because the bearing needs to be pressed on/off the axle shaft with bazooka-shaped tool. Take a look (you know it's a long process when they do a two-part video lol):

Dorman sells a $400 DIY-friendly assembly with pre-pressed axle shaft and brake backing plate, but it's a Dorman bearing and Dorman axle shaft: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=13700377&cc=1445515&pt=10439&jsn=9

Thanks. I don't hear much good things about Dorman.

$1k per side is the typical going rate for rear wheel bearings at a dealer

The dealer did mine back in 2019, with a total cost of $1,934.01 out the door after tax. This included seals and bearings (total parts billed = $1,040). I think you could find a lower price, even at a dealer, but at the time, no reliable independent shop near me wanted to take on the job. So, I took it to Toyota and had one of their master techs, with 15+ years of experience, handle it. He even came out to talk to me beforehand. If that cost a few extra hundred bucks, I have no complaints.

    1. More than it would cost do to it yourself.

The minimum cost for a shop to work on your vehicle is $230/hr.

The labor rate on fixing your truck yourself is $0/hr.

I'm in Charlotte as well. I would be wise to do mine.
Maybe I could pay you to do mine after you do yours if you buy the required tools like Harbor Freight shop press and $200 adapter SST.

Because shop labor is $230/hr minimum, and the job flat rate book time is at least a couple of hours. Math.

It's not astronomical. 2 apples + 2 apples = 4 apples is not astronomical. It is math.

    Different things have different prices.
A solo mechanic working on his own is $50-100/hr.

A shop has more expenses to pay at the end of the month than a solo mechanic. Including but not limited to lights, lifts, shop rent, lift electricity power usage (lifts use more power than a light bulb), non-value costs like HR accounting etc.

Correct. the sound is mostly at low-mid speeds. I took it to a shop, and they used a stethoscope to listen to see where it was coming from. It was discovered that it's the rear passenger (right) bearing.

That makes sense. Since you're in Charlotte, then you probably heard of Toyota Tech of Fort Mill. They are reputable and does good work. I ordered the parts. I just decided to take it to them to perform the work.

$1000 is a steal for dealership work. I think they miss quoted you.

$2k is much closer to the real price for a dealer.

You talking per side or both? $1k per side is pretty standard in my experience

Dealer (Toyota of Rock Hill) quoted $1299. Independant shop (Toyota Tech of Fort Mill) quoted $1000. This is for one side only.

    1 side.

I just did the rear bearings on a tundra last month. The customer was quoted $2300 for 1 side from our local dealer.

    I did both for $1300.

I'm enjoying this conversation. Even though I'm from Michigan, we have family in Ft. Mill. I know of all the places that have been mentioned in the posts.

Yeah. They are very good. They don't take credit cards though. Only cash and checks.

Had both done on my 2016, around $1100 each, a bit of labor involved!!
