Its a word you can attach to any product so you can charge double what its worth. Sort of like selling anything to people that do CrossFit, that says its good for CrossFit.

The only thing more obnoxious than coming up with terms to describe things unnecessarily is gatekeeping use of terms.

Car Camping - v: open the trunk of your car, toss your 6 person family tent that was an impulse buy while you were shopping for gray sweatpants. Where it lands is where you pitch. You paid admission to be here. There is a full-amenity restroom within a shorter hike than the distance between your actual bed and master bathroom. There is also an electrical outlet to plug in your surplus Christmas lights and recharge your kid's ipad.

Boondocking - v: like car camping, except you bring your own electricity. There might be a 100 yard hike to a pit toilet. Your vehicle saw one whole quarter-mile of dirt to be here.

Overlanding - v: Exactly like boondocking but with a $1500 tent because the ungroomed floor attendant at Suburban Outback convinced you that sleeping on the roof of your car is the one thing that the professional National Geographic Stanley Livingston explorers do. He neglects to mention that lions of the Serengeti have no issues climbing a four foot aluminum ladder either, but who cares, because neither you or your tent will ever see them. You might have a lifted jeep as optional, but only if you have the common sense to realize that a tent mounted to your WRX's roof rack looks dorky as hell.

True Overlanding - adv: nothing any of us will ever do. Usually involves a convoy of land cruisers and fancy camera editing to make it appear that the nature show host isn't actually staying in a 5 star hotel between takes.

I thought Overloading was the process of spending all your free time indoors looking at websites that promote and sell truck accessories while spending money you don't have on stuff that has the dual purpose making your truck more uncomfortable and less useful for actual day-to-day truck uses.

Expedition Overland defined Overlanding in one of their podcasts by saying that it requires travel to/through a different country by vehicle.

Then in several YouTube videos they described their travels through the US as Overlanding soooo whatever definition fits the bill I guess.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Lol!! :) Priceless. I will say I like those traction boards, not so much for the taco, but the Yamaha gets good use of them.

These are killer to watch. These guys ham it up in their built LCs. Spending a lot of time pulling winch lines, cracking cold ones, and acting a fool at dinner time.

i know what it used to mean, but recently, what it means is; a title for excessive overpriced trendy gear that Tacoma fanboys put on their mall crawler trucks.

Overland use to mean serious expedition type trips.

Now it means going to the KOA and posting it on the gram.

Overlanding, to me, means going from point A to point B that has no roads. No pavement, no gravel, no cleared path. For example, if you are in Utah and just headed across the dirt and sand where there are no roads or paths and you went 100 miles. That is overlanding, to me. If there is a trail or road? Then you are camping.

In most states we call that "trespassing."

To properly overland, you need a prairie schooner and some oxen.
