I get it. I don't plan on ever needing the capacity of the ARB, but better to have it and not need it. Or possibly hurt someone. At $270 the ARB is a good portion of a front bumper that ties into the frame with recovery points (maybe in the future). But for $160 it was a no-brainer, better than buying a new head unit. There aren't many choices for the Tacoma, but the route you took is better than using the OEM hook or some other choices.

I've got some training in recovery. The basics are the same but a lot has changed since then (synthetic shackles what?). A lot of the training was safety and that part stuck with me. Reading some of the posts on the OR hook makes me SMH.

I enjoy watching recoveries on YouTube and even Rescue 401 (my first time driving that in Toronto I was like WTF lane should I be in?).

I used to live near a little town called Linden around there. Worked at Lone Star Steel cutting train cars apart for scrap. But that was in 1981.
Edit, I think the yard I worked at was actually T&N.

I agree with you 100%. You are absolutely right. Even at $270 the ARB is completely worth it. It is the only 100% sure solution. For $160, you are right, it is a no brainer.

I really don't plan on using the BPF in the front. 99% of the time I will use the shackle hitch because I feel much safer doing that and I really don't want to be doing pulling with the front end of my truck. Not saying it can't be done but I am just not comfortable doing it -- I also suspect it is not great for the front end. Now, plenty of people do it ... and that is probably because they know more about recovery than I do. But I did want the option in case there was a weird location, etc. that I couldn't get to from the shackle hitch.

The whole recovery world is a pretty serious affair that takes a lot more knowledge than I have, for sure. But just the other day I pulled out an AWD car that pulled over to make a phone call and got stuck in really soft mud. Took all of 15 minutes and was a straight pull but I was glad I over did it on the shackle hitch.

I too watch Rescue 401 ... those dudes are absolutely nuts and I mean that in the most respectful way.

But I guess enough about recovery. Now that I have my plan and the gear for it I can move on to the roof rack next. I'll post a picture later of the recovery kit for the rear. Rhino makes a really nice one that includes the receiver hitch, the shackle and the strap in a bag for about $60. Totally worth it in my opinion.

Now if I could get better with a come along ... :)
