One new tire this morning and one more night at the VRBO. $360ish. The dog doesn't seem inconvenienced with any of it. All thanks to United Assh*le services who claim zero responsibility and refuse to reimburse me. We'll see about that, *cough small claims court *cough. :luvya:

Finally had time for a tire rotation/proper cleaning to knock off the trail dust!

Big Brand said it was too close to the edge for a patch. Plus hot AZ summers are really hard on tires and I'm doing a cross country move soon.

I seem to recall you said you were leaving our pleasant little furnace in AZ. Cannot recall if we local-yokels inspired the move or if you had rational reasons.

It's been in the works for a couple of years. My house doubled in value and my hoa/neighbors were awful. Lakefront property is next. Looking at NC.

I have a red-cover Atlas-Gazeteer from NC, showing smaller county and local and unpaved roads, if you want to take a gander. PM when/where to meet if interested.

Anyone else have an issue with the oil filter housing breaking? Put the filter key on and the teeth snapped right off the plastic housing. Turned into an all day project.
Looking for an after market oil filter housing recommendation…for now just got another OEM but afraid it might happen again

Motivx (https://www.motivxtools.com) grips the strongest/bottom and should not break the filter. Did you use a ratcheting-wrench thing that grips the side instead of the bottom?

Metal housing is an option. I've been using the same plastic one for 7 years.

Yes it gripped the sides, got it from O’Reilly Autoparts for $10. Honestly I think the last time I had an oil change done with the dealership they must have over torqued it. Specs say 25 lb pressure but this was sane to get off had to use a breaker bar, well my dad did.

    Thanks for the site recommendation!!

Side grip is the worst for the hollow filter housings ... was designed for solid metal filters. The Motivx girps where it is most solid. Whether you get the metal or plastic housing, get the Motivx to avoid breaking the next one. It comes recommended by many in TW.

It seems pretty common that dealerships or quick-change places over-torque these housings. BTW, spec is 18 ft/lb, which really isn't much more than snug after your run it up. The tool is a great investment and I also like the metal housing for several reasons over the OEM housing. Not that you absolutely need it, but there's also a special funnel that screws into the oil fill extension housing, too. The angle of that fill housing leaves me wondering what Toyota was thinking.

Sucks when a project like that takes all day instead of an hour like you planned............most of us have been there..........more than once on projects! At least you'll have confidence in it being done right for next time.

Also, you can reuse your plug, no need to replace that.

Yep, same thing happened to me with the plastic housing, but a much smaller hole where the tab broke off. Unfortunately didn't even know it until AFTER the oil change. Went to crank it up for a leak check (thankfully) and spit oil absolutely everywhere. Good news, I had incredible oil pressure! Bad news, that pressure sent oil all over the engine bay and ground underneath.. Went with an auto parts store aluminum housing. It was great for 2 oil changes, then developed some sort of micro crack I couldn't even physically see inside the 3/8" drive indent of the drain cap. It barely leaked, really only when it was warm, but enough that I bought another housing. I've been through it with these oil filter housings, but I'm still thankful to find the issues myself and be responsible when failures happen, not relying on dealerships to create them and blow my engine.
