What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

Put a remanuf denso/toyota alternator in. Looks like when the alternator went it fried my HKB booster too. That alternator is a pain to r/r with the supercharger belt, tensioner, and bracket on the way. I hope this one lasts another 12 years and 110k miles.

what year and miles?
Would you recommend this as preventive maintenance to anyone with similar "stats"(miles etc.) to avoid the hard way of finding out and experiencing issues?

feels like a gamble daily trying to stretch every last mile out of an old part that on any other car would've already been replaced a long time ago
"if it aint broke dont fix it" well if a wheel falls off tomorrow that's not good + part life expectancy

was hoping RockAuto but didn't see reman Denso from them

After 13 years on TW this is the 1st negative thing I have ever heard about having a well operating supercharger. I know the standard 4.0 alternator job is pretty easy.

 

2012 with ≈111k miles. It didn't leave me stranded. The battery light came on when I wasn't far from home and I had 11.9v on the X2 battery still. When the truck was running my ultragauge was showing 11.0v. I wouldn't replace it as preventative...it had been making noise for a couple weeks so it knew it was coming just didn't have a chance to diagnose until after the voltage drop.

It's a pain to get to the tensioner pulley for the serpentine and the lower mount bolt on the alternator. Just stuff in the way so it's pretty tight. May have taken less time if I removed the supercharger belt and tensioner instead of trying to work around it.

yeah idk about stranded. Had a belt come off a car, alt stopped charging
barely limped home
half electronics dead inside, turned off radio to save power HVAC etc

 

1GR supercharger belts are a huge pain.

We love when advisors sell them for standard book time and wonder why we get pissy haha.

 

I'm going to try and make a long 14mm open end with a bend to get to the serp tensioner and work around the bracket for the supercharger belt tensioner instead of having to come in between the water pump and crankshaft from under the truck. I wouldn't have needed to remove the heavy relentless IFS skid either.

I did but I used an A/C machine that we have at work.

 

Well now I know why cylinders had some milkshake. A previous owner used a generic gasket and applied rtv everywhere, but did a pretty awful job.

 

All buttoned up and tools put away. For anybody who wants to try this out, go for it! it was my first time and took me about 5 hours including set up and clean up. Not too difficult.

Notes for first timers with a 2.7l:

Done in the driveway, no jacks or anything required obv. A small 3 step ladder was mandatory for me to get to the back of the cover.

I did not use any power tools. I did use a name brand calibrated torque wrench.

Cleaning off all the silicone on the cover took awhile. Cleaning the mating surface on the engine also took awhile.

The 12mm bolt holding the pipe bracket on the back side of the block SUCKS without a long extension and a flex head ratchet, which I did not have handy. I crawled up into the truck to do it. I recommend loosening this FIRST so you can rest your weight on the cover if you need to crawl in there.

Two plastic tabs broke: one click tab on the secondary air pump thing, and one of the clips that holds the harness on the front if the cover. Sucks but hey it’s an 18 year old truck.

The factory service manual download I had was 80 in/lbs. use a torque wrench.

i used permatex ultra black for the two rtv locations, so I haven’t fired up the truck yet while I wait for it to cure. Hope it turns out well tomorrow!

note to myself: i forgot to tighten the clamps on the large intake hoses, make sure to do that tomorrow.

 

I learned back in the day (Toyota 20R engine) that over tightening valve cover bolts leads to them leaking.

 

Did some cleaning and rust proofing . Krown
Changed cabin filter and lubed uni-balls

 

TRI-FLOW is some good stuff, plus it smells good!

 

Almost 100 K on my Taco now. figured a good time to do stuff on the list.
4 plugs, serpentine belt, Uni filter, power steering rack (leaking badly), Set of Goodyear Duratracs, clutch slave ,
change ALL fluids
,greased drive shaft & threw in a Techron. Added up to some bucks but worth the investment on a fifteen year old truck with a great history. My second Taco since 1996 , both new, Love em.
