    Hey all,

Doing an oil change soon on my 2009 V6 4.0 with 121,000 miles.

No leaks anywhere as far as I can tell and so I’m wondering whether I should put off using high mileage full synthetic VS extended life full synthetic VS regular full synthetic? Really don’t want to start using oil with extra additives to stop leaks if I don’t have leaks, cost is no issue. Also would love brand recommendations, I bought Mobil1 oil and filter but would return if someone gives a reason why I should buy the OEM oil filter for like $50??

Pick the bottle with the color and design that you like best. Does a red bottle make you feel like your car is better lubricated? Use it. Silver makes you think of smooth? Use it.

Personally I use Valvoline Synthetic and a Toyota filter but I believe it come more down to changing it on time than what oil you use.
Change it every 4500-5000 mi and use a quality filter and oil that meets the correct specs for the engine and you should have no issues.
That being said using a full synthetic on a high mileage engine that's never had it can possibly cause leaks on aged seals.
The additives that are supposed to help with that are usually just a band-aid, if a seal or gasket is starting to leak or already leaking theres no amount of additives that will fix it.

OEM oil filter for 50 bucks!!!

    Where do you shop?

This question has been asked and answered numerous times already, so you might get a few responses influenced by that fact.

Use the grade of oil recommended in the manual. As long as it meets the specifications, you're good to go. I personally use a Toyota OEM filter. But other members use their own preference of filters.

FWIW. I follow the 5K interval.

I favor Pennzoil, Quaker or Valvoline Full Syn oils. Usually in a 5w30 viscosity.

Filter, I prefer WIX, NAPA Gold, ACDelco or Bosch. New each change.

No need to over think this. Generally, any oil that meets the API grade and Viscosity specified in the Owner's Manual will be acceptable.

Suggest to steer clear of the orange filters.

$50 for one oil filter is the equivalent of your sphincter being dilated with a 5 gallon bucket. You can do an oil change yourself for under $30 using an OEM filter.

I buy whatever is on special. Usually is Mobile 1. I don’t read much into the “extended performance” or “high mileage” etc. claims. Seems too much like just marketing.

Full synthetic 5w-30 is all I look for. Like everyone says, it really only matters that you change it. I always do 5k mile intervals.

Get yourself an account with Amsoil and pay the ten smackers to become a preferred customer. You then get some nice discounts. Buy in quantity and it's really not too bad. Man alive...when you pour that gorgeous nectar into the gullet of a car it'll give you goose pimples knowing that it'll soon be bathing the delicate internals with the most glorious oil known to man. An oil that spreads an unbeatably fast film which adhere's to engine parts with the tenancity of a burr in a horse's tail.

Mobil1 5w-30 from Meijer or Walmart for $22 and Toyota OEM denso filters for $7. I tow with my truck so I change it every 3000 or 4000K but you can't go wrong for a $30 oil change.

There are plenty of u-tube videos on oil and oil filter comparisons, so do a google search and you'll find a week's worth of information or more to sort through. I now personally use any 5w-30 full synthetic oil and any good quality long-life oil filter on-sale at the time of oil change. I change oil and filter at the 5000-mile intervals. Why the 5000-miles, it makes me feel good. I still do have my preferences, but it's not as important as it used to be and it's more important to change it.
Currently, our 07 HHR rarely makes the miles change interval during a full year of driving so I use a full synthetic 5w-30, which the 5w-30, is it's spec according to the manual and a good quality oil filter that I feel will stand the long change interval. Haven't had an issue related to the oil change interval to date.

    Same as everybody else...
I use synthetic oil always, usually Castroil or Pennzoil 5w30. Currently running Valvoline cause it was on sale at Walmert. I always use OEM filters, buy em off of Amazon or Walmert at about 6.50 a pop. Im a time or mileage old guy, change my oil 4 months or 5k

Super Tech high mileage synthetic with OEM filter. My local Walmart actually started carrying/selling Toyota oil filters.

This ^^^ it doesn’t matter what oil you use as long as you use the correct viscosity and you change it at or before manufacturers recommended intervals. Your engine won’t last a mile longer whether you use Dino or synthetic nor what brand you use.
