What does the lane assist do?

Newbie here with a question. My 2018 Taco needs a windshield. If I don't get it calibrated, does that only effect the lane assist, or does it also effect the pre collision or cruise control?
    Thanks!

If your truck starts to drift into a new lane without a turn signal on, it alerts you. The idea is that "no turn signal" means you are sleeping or distracted, thus you need to pay attention.

If they don't disconnect the wires from the camera, you will not need a calibration. Whenever I had my windshield replaced, the glass place said they would not be able to do the calibration since I had larger tires/lift. Said I needed to take it to a dealer. I surfed around on here and found another guy who said a Toyota tech told him that if the camera was not disconnected, you don't need to re-calibrate it. I noticed on mine that whenever they had the windshield out I could see the camera dangling from the wires, so I assumed they didn't disconnect it. That was back in January and I have had no problems. I did not want to take it to the dealer and listen to them whine about the tires/lift, so I just called it good. Glad I did !

BTW, that camera affects all the things you mentioned Lane departure alert, pre-collision, and adaptive cruise control, as well as the auto high beams

This is incorrect information. Whoever told you this is not educated enough on the subject. Disconnecting a component doesn’t make it lose its programming/calibration. That camera is calibrated to that specific location and changing the windshield affects its position and orientation. It’s needs to be recalibrated to function correctly. It could work but it’s probably sending false warning because it’s not pointing to the specified location.

This is especially dangerous for vehicle that have steering/brake assist. Those vehicle’s erroneously brake or swerve because they were not recalibrated causing the vehicle to get into an accident.

I agree that dealers give false information, that is because you’re talking to a service writer that doesn’t have enough automotive knowledge. Always speak with the shop foreman if you want real answers.

Pre-collision and adaptive cruise control are controlled by the millimeter-wave radar located under the Toyota emblem.

Yeah, you're probably right. I was just sharing my experience/observations. Since I had the windshield replaced, I have not noticed any difference in how the truck reacts to different situations. The cruise control works the same as it always did, the pre-collision works same as it always did and the lane departure/ auto high beams works same as they always did. I am not getting any errors, so I'm calling it good. Of course the OP has to do whatever he feels is the safest. And I'm sure he has been driving his truck long enough that he would recognize whether those systems were functioning correctly or not Myself, I have been driving for 45 years and I don't rely too heavily on all of this newer technology to keep me safe on the road. Also, I thought the camera worked in conjunction with the millimeter radar sensor. Perhaps I misunderstood.

    Yes and no.

On Toyotas the radar and camera co-witness each other (unlike at least one other brand that only uses a camera). The camera does most of the heavy lifting at speed, while the radar is better at close-range detection like pedestrians. Both have to be properly communicating for the system to be engaged.

SafeliteRepair-SafeliteReplace claims they can recalibrate properly after replacement. What is the TW experience with this?

Safelite is where I had my windshield replaced. Unfortunately, I can't comment on the calibration part because they declined doing it due to the mods I did

PCS disabled warning will pop up if the camera sensor is blocked or covered. As rock lobster said, it uses both

i dont know about Toyota cameras..But Lets just say you lifted a honda 2inches,i hightly doubt the camera would aim.the bracket that comes on a Honda OEM windshield is positioned within 1mm spec/up,down left and right..and the windshield is pegged.
the camera doesnt have an infinite adjustment.

For a lift, I see your point ... makes things a bit sticky. But if Safelite can do a standard-height Tacoma that would ease my mind a bit.

    How much doesn’t recalibration cost?

I’m confident it doesn’t cost free-fiddy or $8,000. Probably somewhere in between

It's totally beyond me how I survived 60+ years of driving with out all those gadgets. I'm thinking it had a lot to do with all the stuff they put in vehicles now to distract drivers.

Safelite replaced my windshield, but it had to be done at their shop to be able to re-calibrate the camera.
