What console safe have you installed?

Looking to add a console safe to my '21 Tacoma. Looking at Console Vault and Locker down. Not sure what else is out there. Any experience or recommendations on one?

I had the Console Vault in my old Frontier, and I have the Locker Down in my 2020 Taco.

I'd say either one would be a decent choice, though the Locker Down I have is made of slightly thicker metal.

I had regular keys for both (barrel for the Console Vault and the higher security key for the Locker Down), so I can't speak for the other lock mechanisms.

Interestingly, my Frontier was broken into a few months before I got my Toyota, and it looked like they didn't even try to mess with the vault, so I guess it did its job as a deterrent. :)

Can you still access the power ports in the console?

Yes, there is an opening just for the USB port.

I just installed my new Lock'erdown with the reinforced steel yesterday in my 2019 and it fits like a glove. I opted for the combo dial lock figuring that if I just happen to have a sidearm in there because my employer doesn't allow them on the property and if I just happen to need it quickly, then I don't want to fumble with a keychain that I hopefully have access to.

That being said, I notice that turning the dial is a bit "snaggy" and wondering if anyone who has one has bothered to either file down the lips where the lock engages a bit to polish them or perhaps put a dollop of grease on it?

However I wasn't able to see how to route my USB cable up and over the locked door. How did you figure that out? Perhaps a good closeup picture would help, if you please.

Just an FYI: I went to order the Tuffy box (from Tuffy) the other day and they emailed me back saying they were on backorder at least through March or April. You might find one from an authorized dealer, but coming direct from Tuffy will take awhile.

Excuse the question but other then a firearm what would be the reason to have a safe? The law of the land is never leave anything valuable in your vehicle unattended ever. Just curious guys, tks $.02

Generally for anything you don't want to leave out in the open for people to see, and to avoid the smash-n-grabs that happen more often nowadays. It is useful for going places that you can't carry concealed, say, if you have to drop by the post office in the middle of running your chores (shopping, buying more wood for the deck project, grabbing a couple of 6-packs, etc.)

FYI, The Tuffy brand is not a fully enclosed vault. It is just a lid with 4 steel corner "legs" that are more skeletal in construction. The Locker Down is a fully enclosed heavy steel box with a robust lid. Nothing negative, just putting some helpful info out to help understand the difference in cost between the two.

Honestly, I don't use them. I have all the USB ports I need on my dash so I have not tried to run a cord thru the console vault.

A vault / safe like this is one of the first things I do to a new vehicle. Mostly to handle places where I can't carry, but as a side effect, I can also keep some things in it like the lug nut key and so forth that pretty much need to stay in the truck anyway.

Also a good place to put things I don't want to carry around while on a hike (or the like).

I have had the Locker Down with combo for a couple years. It was in my 2017 and just moved it into the 2021.
Combo lock has been smooth and it rolls well under the thumb. After install I literally sat and spun the dials for a bit and the action smoothed out.

Aside from the obvious weapon storage, I agree it is a great spot to store valuables while on a hike or kayaking. I don't like to carry extra stuff and some things I rather not even try to waterproof. Lug key and assorted park passes all hang out in there as well.
Probably one of my favorite upgrades considering frequency of use and ease of install. Doesn't hurt supporting Texas companies either.

Has anybody had problems with the console lid not closing easily after the install (i.e. The safe assembly a little too tall)?

I have not had a problem. You can actually leave the safe unlatched and let it move freely with the console lid. The spring on the safe lid will allow it to open along with you console but does not stop the consoling from closing with the stock latch. This is convenient if you are keeping something there you want quickly accessible during your drive. No need to open the console then fumble to open the safe. All one quick action.
