I'm looking for a general purpose chainsaw that i'm able to use around the property and load up and carry with me on the trail while overlanding. I've got a ton of trigger time on saws from wildland firefighting but most of my time was spent on a stihl 460 - which is definitely overkill for overlanding and any stuff around my property. Let me know what you guys use that works size and power wise.

    I have a sthil 290 w/ a 20" bar, but you could do fine w/ a 190 or 250 w/ a 16" bar.
I'm gonna go down w/ my bar to get some more rpm's.

I currently have a Sthil MS 171, which has been great for most stuff. My dad has a Sthil MS250 that he is going to give me so I think that will be a more appropriately sized saw.

I carry a jonsered 2150 turbo with a 16 inches bar on it. don't need much bigger then that. Coming from british Columbia cutting huge trees to alberta to cutting tooth picks works great! !

I like Stihl saws. I have an 026 with an 18" bar and though I don't use it often it's a great saw.

That works well up until you're not wheeling with me and you have to try to find fire wood. I feel the same way about the EAF grill though...

I run a Husqvarna 435. I have to support my fellow Scandinavians when I can. I clear a lot of dead fall on trails and only occasionally think I could use a bigger saw.

I'm in Virginia, so it gets a mix of evergreen, oak, and maple. It tears through oak w/o any hesitation. Felling is great, spent a weekend bucking up some massive oak trees after a storm, only issue was I needed to sharpen it halfway through the day. And I keep thinking I'm going to go to the 16" bar

I had it for awhile and sold it. It was an old one and good saw but got a new MS261 CM. I love Stihl products and they are not much more than what items are at Home Depot and what not.

well one should sharpen chain after every tree to be able to get more cut. the fact you went half a day cutting through oak and made it that far is pretty decent. what I do is after I cut a tree is do a maintenance sharpen takes 5 mins or after you cut a tree with a bunch of dirt or sand or a nail or two in it or the odd bullet. sharper the chain is the the better is it. don't forget the bar oil!
