Does anyone know what size battery fits the 1997 4x4 V6 tacoma reg cab? Auto stores list different group sizes and the manual does not say. The one i have now has no stickers saying what it is. I don't know how many CCA it needs.

    Advanced auto list
    24F
    35
    26R

    as exact fit.

it doesn't have to have that high of CCA that's just a listing for the best battery listed. 575cca and 715ca would be ok

I just replaced the battery in my '96. Group 24F - perfect fit. I think this group is standard throughout the Tacoma range as it's the same in my '23

I always have gone with Group 35. Seems to fit just fine, but I'm not sure what size it had from the factory.

I just googled it. The 24F is an inch longer and rated higher CCA. I know the battery tray is longer than my group 35, so it is probably designed for the 24F.

24F is standard in gen 1 and 2. I don’t know about gen 3. I think a 27 F would fit but am not sure. I know 27F came with gen 2’s that have the tow package.
Whether to get an AGM is up to you. AGM’s are great batteries but they fail too just like other batteries. They generally last longer but cost a lot more. I’ve used regular (not agm) batteries for many years and in many vehicles and all have lasted at least 5 years. Don’t want to start pro/con agm battery discussion here, it’ll go on for weeks and nothing will be resolved.
So what ever battery you get you should be fine with a 24F.
