Still stock here, but trying to compile some data for future mods. What are your rpms at freeway speeds and what mods have you done? With my cruise control set at 80mph, my 6MT is at 2600rpm

    1. 70 mph
    2. 80 mph
    3. Trans? (Auto or mt)
    4. Regeared?
    5. Tire size

    70 is probably 2500 RPM. 80 - 2700-3500, depending on wind/octane/grade/elevation/temperature/humidity

With cruise set, you are actually around 77 mph, 80 would be more like 2800-2850 on a stock truck. But anyways, I'll play:

    1. 70 - 2850
    2. 80 - 3250
    3. Manual
    4. Yes, 5.29
    5. 255/75R17 (32.05")

    Previously 5.29 with stock tire:

    1. 70 - 3000
    2. 80 - 3400
    3. Same
    4. 5.29
    5. 265/65R17 (30.6 stock sport)

    3. AT
    4. Stock
    5. Stock size but a little heavier than the stock tires.

AT is geared differently than the MT so that's why my RPMs are lower.

Yes, those who say it is over 200rpm must be using a manual or something, because it even clearly states in the manual that one should be running at 1600 rpm at 60mph. I run around 70 and my rpms then are at 1800. That is a big selling point, or at least it was, to me, because common sense dictates that if an engine rpms are running lower, it is less wear on the engine. My old 96 tacoma would run about 2400rpm at 70mph, and so, that means my 2019 tacoma engine is wearing at 25% less since it runs at 1800rpm at 70mph.

Engine rpm at a given speed is solely determined by transmission gear ratio, differential gear ratio, and tire diameter. Unless you are modifying one of those. nothing is going to change.

You can look up the gear ratios in a number of places like this thread:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-5-29-mega-thread.557305/

With a little math, you can answer your own question. Or you look for an online calculator like this one:

If you're looking for a really good gear ratio calculator try grimmjeeper.com. Hardest part if figuring out what transmission you have (its on the door sticker) but it knows all the ratios for that.

Its what I've been using to help people figure out what gear ratio they need for the regear group buy I'm running

Been through the 5.29 thread, like finding a needle in a haystack. Just wanted to know real world numbers from others, since they may have different tire setups other than stock.

Been proven the AT is easier on these engines valve train when at lower rpm, plus better fuel economy.

Ultimately, I'd like a 6mt Tacoma owner to chime in with 5.29s and 285/75r17s with what their rpms are at 80mph.

Did the grimm jeeper website check, thanks for that, kyle

No problem! were you able to figure it out and get the answer you wanted on there?

I think it got me a ballpark figure, roughly 2700rpm at 80mph with 285/75r17s.

Looking promising, after I pay off this truck

Sounds about right. I'm jealous of all you 6 speed guys, My truck is screaming with 4.88's and 33's at 80. If I had that one extra gear it would probably drive so nice.

Keep an eye out. I run Socal.Toyotas on Instagram and we have a partnership going on with Premier West Gears for regearing. Running our second group buy with them right now, probably won't be our last one either. Since you're in San Diego it wouldn't be too far of a drive for you to go to their shop when the time comes, save yourself a few bucks

You don’t need to read the entire thread. The gear ratios are in the 2nd post. There’s no reason to get “real world numbers” as they are easily calculated to a decent level of precision.

An even easier thing to do, since you already know you have 2600 rpm at 80 mph, is take the ratio of the two tire sizes and multiple it by 2600. For example, 31/33 * 2600 = 2400. Plug in more precise numbers for a more precise answer.

To calculate the effect of new diff gears is just as simple, for example, 5.29 / 4.3 * 2600 = 3200.

    If you want to calculate the effect of both, just combine them. For example, 31 / 33 * 5.29 / 4.3 * 2600 = 3000.

    Easy peasy.

The only source of error here is the actual circumference of each tire. Asking people for their “real world numbers” is introducing this error as well as error in measuring one’s speed. For example, Different sized tires mess with the speed reported by the speedometer. If they haven’t recalibrated their speedometer or are using a different method of measuring their speed, they are giving you inaccurate data.

I just bought my 2014 automatic, and I noticed that it feels like it needs another gear. Its's running 265/70r16 tires, and 3000rpm at 70mph. I doubt it's been regeared. I hope there isn't a tranny problem.... thoughts?

Sounds like it’s either regeared or not going into 5th. Stock auto 2nd gen revs more like 2000-2200 at highway speed with the stock 3.73s. If it’s going into 5th then you either have a bad gauge cluster or you are regeared.

Thanks. That's what I was afraid of. I think the gauges are fine, the speedometer is dead on. It feels like it isn't going into 5th... I guess I'll have it checked out.

Maybe go to an industrial park or take an lightly used highway exit, where you can downshift and count,,,,without impeding traffic behind you, to be safe.

I don’t know about the 2nd gen, but 3rds are easy and cheap enough to buy a Bluetooth OBDII reader and phone app, one of the bazillion features is gear count.
