I do all sorts of fishing, freshwater, saltwater, surf fishing. I've got about 16 combos in my fishing rod arsenal. What are your favorites? Heres mine...

I have 5 Penn combos for saltwater. My favorite would have to be number 4 in the lineup. A Spinfisher VI with a 7’ Penn rod.

Sorry... no pics but I love my St. Croix Eyecon rod and Pfleuger Presidential XT reel. Not the most expensive setup but reliable.

Pfleuger makes a nice reel. I've got one in a ultralite for trout fishing. Really like that reel.

Other than glueing them together with pvc cement. I put flat caps on each end and bolt/gorilla glued the metal bracket on the ends. The bottom of the vertical tubes sits against the back of the bed so it wont rotate with weight in the rod holders. Ill take a picture and post it when i get home from work.

I have all different combos as well. It never ends. Between freshwater, salt on boat, salt on land, salt on jetties it gets crazy, haha. Ive added a couple more since i originally posted this also.

Haven’t caught a shark on this one yet. I did on a Battle II 8500, it was about 30” and didn’t show the least bit of strain. I wouldn’t be afraid to hook a bigger one with it. Of course as you know the Spinfisher is a lot better reel than the Battle II.

That was not even a question for saltwater.

Are they that good? I got a Penn fierce reel for surf fishing for what I think was a good deal. 80 bucks with a penn graphite rod 10ft.

I like Penns, just havent bought one recently since my Squall 12. Lately i have buying alot of Tsunami stuff. Amazing quality and very affordable. I have 3 Tsunami Shields(4000, 5000, 6000) I love them because they are completely sealed and are great for saltwater fishing.

Subbing to lurk this thread. Just moved to a coastal area last year and am wanting to step up my fishing game considerably, shore, surf, and kayak.

Ain’t that the truth! I have enough invested in in fishing gear to get a 2009 trd.... got me a taco to tow a boat that I will eventually get..
I see, might have to build me a set up!

Isn’t shore and surf the same? Unless you meant jetties and surf? You could a set up that will work for both but depends on the jetties... if you can stand on top of the jetties to cast then you can choose a long enough rod to use for both surf and rocks (jetties)..
Here in Southern Cali for both applications (though I have specific setups for each scenario and am partial to baitcasters - which differs to the east coast style of spinners) my general go to if I am only taking 1 set up to do both types would be:
A 8’6” inshore assassin by phenix rods (ml) and a shimano curado/abu inshore/abu premier/daiwa Luna etc... lol.. any 200 size will do.. as for kayak then I would bump up the reel size to some like abu revo toro 50 etc.. and a rod long enough to clear the bow of the yak.. I recommend sites like bloody decks and sc surfishing for surf and jettys, and bigwatersedge for kayak fishing...

I use them for surf fishing on the outer banks. Very high quality. I’ve used other cheap reels and had some bend or break when reeling in a big drum etc. penn reels are quality and have internal parts than can be replaced.

It’s all relative. But I’ve had good luck with them. Most of mine are more than five years old since they last so long. I’m not sure if the new ones have the same quality.
