My truck failed inspection because the "parking lights" were out but, after leaving the station, I realized I didn't know which part of the headlight assembly those are exactly. Can you identify them as 1, 2 or 3 marked on this picture, or something else? Also, when/how does this light turn on and off?

    Thanks

I believe the lamps at "2" serve as the parking lights (and front side-marker lamps) on at least the 2005 Tacoma. The bulbs at "1" are directionals-only. Edited: On my 2014: The directionals, DRL's (on-off switchable) and parking lights are all combined at "1". The bulbs at "2" serve as the front side-marker lamps. Bulb: 168 N/A. Position "3" is a front side reflector. When we replaced the front headlamps on my son's 2005, they operated the same way as the old headlamps, using the new bulbs that came with the replacements. Toyota may have changed it at some point after 2005. His truck passes state inspection with this configuration.

Should be: 168NA (small 5w amber wedge)

3157 NAK (natural amber krypton) is the combined turn/park/DRL bulb in my 2014.

They are pesty to remove and replace, especially the one on the drivers-side in front of the battery. Twist the long white holder at the connector and pull it out. Pull the old bulb out of the socket and replace.

If they are #2, this is what the bulbs look like (right and left)

Yes. Same bulbs as the license plate lamps, except the front lamps are amber instead of clear.

They're activated by rotating the headlight switch on the turn signal stalk to that setting that identifies dangerously stupid people who then drive down the road in pitch black night with an illuminated dashboard and no headlights or taillights.

It also helps identify people like me who use run-on sentences to express their frustration with this aspect of motor vehicle design. I cannot fathom a situation where it's useful to have an illuminated dashboard with essentially zero external illumination.

But hey, glad these folks helped you find yer new bulbs so you can get back on the road!
