I'm looking for front fenders for a project taco I'm building and seeing them listed as different between the 96-00 and the 01-04's.
I thought they were the same besides the square holes cut in the front fenders with the plastic flares on the 01-04's.This is an 01 TRD ,V6 5sp with the stepside bed and actually has fiberglass flares from the factory.

Does anybody know if the front fenders are interchangeable or what the differences are?

pretty sure the fender doesn't change at all, its just the hood, front end grille, lights, and the radiator support changes for matching the new light mounting spots

That''s what I thought too. Guess I'll find out as I already bought a 98 fender for it off CL.Camelback parts does list different part numbers for the fenders between 98 and 01.I may just put a 97 front end on it like my 00 anyways as Iike the look and have the best headlights IMO.

Don't even have this truck yet as it''s down in Texas at a friend's house but bought.Going to fly down and drive it back in a couple of weeks .Guy I bought it off of ,fell asleep at the wheel and ended up hitting trees. "A" pillar is bent on this one so swapping cabs from another wrecked one I have that was hit in the left front.

Those are definitely 98-00 flares if they are fiberglass. Did the previous owner put those on? I thought the step sides didn't get flares.

He said they were on there when he bought it at a year old and 20 k miles over in Phoenix Az. It has a 10/00 build date and was dealer ordered fully loaded.Maybe they were left over from 00.
Pretty unusual build with the TRD ,5sp and stepside options.Mint frame so I'll rebuild it.

The early flares are all made of fiberglass, so if you see any white under the paint, probably fiberglass,
The early ones are a little smaller I believe in overall size, The larger size you can see the difference by the gas cap area where the flare meets the gas tank door. I picked up a set years ago and they fit perfect on my 1997

The step-side version of the Tacoma got the smaller fiberglass fenders due to the fact the larger ones would not work with the curvature of the rear wheel wells. So they also used the normal front fenders since the smaller flares just use the bottom bolts to mount. There is still a difference from 95-00 and 01-04 due to the side marker lights changing shape (minor)

I am wondering the same. I don’t care about the flare interchange, I just wanna know if the fender shape is the same for all 1st gen. Like: do 99’ 2wd 5lug front fenders and 02’ 4wd 6lug fenders have the same shape and fit? Not thinking about flare mounting.

I do some bodywork work part time with a buddy. I also replaced a fender lately on my YM2001 the aftermarket part I used was tongyang. In their parts references they show a part for MY1995-2000 and a different part for MY2001-2004. So looks like there was differences. Fender was $55 at local aftermarket parts dealer. fit PERFECT you would not be able to tell one's factory or aftermarket. Much easier and better looking when painting on new undented metal. FWIW

The part numbers are different between those years for me too when I do a junkyard search. But then I can compared an 96 ext cab to 02 ext cab on https://partsouq.com/en/catalog/genuine/pick?c=TOYOTA00&model=TACOMA&ssd=$*KwG07umNtbexAAAAAHMMl4c=$ and the part numbers were the same for fenders without flares.

ugh, maybe I messed up. Well tomorrow I’ll be able to say more, I’ll be able to match them side by side.

here is the two parts diagrams of 1995 - 00 and 01-04, maybe the part number change is just the addition of the support.

After matching up I realized that starting in 2000 the bare fender had a small (2”) flat surface around the wheel wheel.
