The best replacement is repairing the OEM starter. This is a cheap fix. The contacts tend to wear down, and start to fail on an intermittent basis, then permanently.

Do a search and you'll see how easy this is to fix. Denso starters are the best for this reason.

Rebuilding (if you have time/tools/skill/space) or having rebuilt your own starter at a local electrical shop.

    Same for alternators.

The reman starters I have used from Carquest/advance are nippondenso and they are fine. They never caused me any issues, and the contacts start to fail right around th same time as an OEM starter would. But yes, it is much cheaper just to replace the contacts than to replace the whole unit.

Dude, most of the time it's just a case of worn out solenoid contacts. Save yourself a ton of money and hold onto your OEM Denso starter.

Here's a video you can use. In the video description, I provide a link to a much more affordable option for the contacts and plunger.

My OEM starter went out at 45,000 miles according to the sevice history. It was replaced with a Bosch one. I'm at 92,000 now and it's never given me any problems.

Trust me. The OEM Denso starter is far superior to the Bosch. But, it's good to hear you're getting some mileage out of that Bosch one. My OEM starter gave me issues at around 120,000 miles. I replaced the contacts and plunger and I now have 170,000 miles on the original starter.

It got replaced before I owned the truck so that was beyond my control, haha. I'll probably put in a Denso one when this one gives out.

I bought a rebuild from Toyota decent price core charge cheap enough I can keep my old one.

200,000 on the original the contacts were almost completely gone the fact it still worked was amazing !!

To rebuild when the mood strikes

Your video is very helpful, and highly recommended. The only thing I would add is that, while you have the starter out, take an extra 10 minutes and grease the gears. I must have seen this in another starter rebuild video, so I added it to my procedure. Granted, I've not heard of a denso starter failing from lack of grease, but it couldn't hurt.

Interestingly, I just rebuilt my '03 Accord Mitsuba starter. It develops a similar starter contact issue, and the brushes wear down. Pulling the starter is not easy, but the rebuild is pretty cheap and easy.

You make a valid point. Didn't even think about greasing the gears. I did grease the shaft of the plunger and the spring though.

There is nothing like having a friend willing to help. Even better when they have the tools you don't have.
