I have the key with remote door lock/unlock/alarm button.aka type C.
It has a chip in it that the cpu has to recognize in order to start.
Manual says don't get it wet. I fish often.
Question is if I dump my kayak will submerging the key 1-disable the door lock function and more importantly will it disable the keys ability to start the truck?
I can always manually unlock the door.
    Thanks

Hard to say how wet it gets? Mine has gone through the washing machine and been fine

Use a cell phone dry bag. $15. Get one big enough for your phone too.

If the fob gets wet pull out the little key and stuff both it and the fob in a bag of dry uncooked rice in the sun. That’ll dry it out. They’re pretty sturdy, and my Toyota keys and fobs have survived getting dropped in the wash, the pool, the harbor…

When I fish I disable the fob (hold lock button double tap unlock) and hide it in the truck. Then I lock the truck manually with the spare and carry it in my pack.

Same for me...key is no worse for wear. It even spent an hour tumbling in the dryer.

Ive always clipped mine to my belt with a lanyard. More worried about losing it than getting it wet.

Ive washed mine a couple times also.

I have a small dry box on my kayak...I put my wallet, keys, phone, etc. in there when I'm out fishing.

This is what I use when fishing in my kayak. Easy and cheap solution in the unlikely event that I roll the boat over.

While not a Toyota story, my dad's experience indicates that keys are a lot more robust than you may think.

One winter, he dropped his key to his Honda in the snow. He had no idea. He proceeded to clear the driveway with the snowblower. When the time came to move the car into the newly cleared driveway, he couldn't find his key. He ended up using the spare. He had asked me if he left it with me, and I told him, "Dad, you used it to move the car. You then cleared the driveway with the snowblower. Then you couldn't find the key. I am sure your key, or what's left of it, will be found when the snow melts."

Sure enough, when the now melted, he found the key, and it worked, lock/unlock buttons and all...

A small dry bag is cheap insurance. Wallet and keys go into one when I kayak. Cell phone goes into a dedicated watertight cell phone case.

    Thanks for the replies.
I don't have the fob and push button start. I have a key that goes into the ignition and turn it to start. The keys handle has the remote door lock/unlock that takes a battery and a chip that enables the computer to start the car when I turn the key. Its a theft prevention measure.
I normally have my keys clipped on my belt loop.
If the remote door locker gets broken I really don't mind I've driven a wrangler X since 2002. I just wanted to determine if the theft prevention chip would still work if it got dunked or should I put it in a couple zip locks and shove it in my front pocket when on the water.
    Thanks again

What about having a plain metal key made to get you in and out of the truck. Lock the key with a chip inside when on the river.

Or just leave the key with Matt Foley. He lives in a van down by the river.... He'll keep it safe.

I did the exact same thing with my 2014 4Runner. Found it weeks later after the snow melted and it worked fine.

Matt may keep the OP’s keys safe. Not sure about the OP’s coffee table though.

A single sealed ziplock would be good, I think. I wouldn’t bother doing it based on my experience getting my normal key (same as yours) wet, but it can’t hurt.

How do you handle your phone when you kayak? Do the same.
