Weird tire wear. Cupping? What could be wrong.

For the past few months, I've been noticing that my front tires look a little funny, steering wheel shakes a little, sounds louder then normal, and they seem to wonder down the road. If you look at my picture, there are parts of tire tread that is a little darker then the rest and they won't feel smooth across when you rub you hand over it.

I know I need some new ball joints (I want some lr uca's) but have been holding off until I can afford them and just get an alignment at the time.

Any one have any ideas? Tire balance, worn OME shocks and springs, alignment issue, bad ball joints, or what?

That's cupping. Typically either you're not rotating or blown shock.

I rotate my tire's all the time so I know that can't be the problem. My OME shocks are a little over 2yrs old. Could they be bad already?

Cupping is caused by the tire literally bouncing on the roadway instead of rolling which causes scuff marks (as your tire has). And more often than not, it's either not enough dampening or too high of a spring rate.

Worn shocks or could also be alignment issue.

    Yes
Your alignment is out and you need to rotate more frequently too. With larger off road tires rotating every 2000 miles is a good idea. You can buy lifetime rotate and balance from Discount Tire even if you didn't buy tires from them, it's worth it.

Alignment won't fix cupping as it doesn't correct the hopping action the tire has on the road.

It boils down to tire rotation, blown shock (or too high spring rate) or excessively worn suspension components, or out of balance tire/wheel.
