Does anyone know of a reason my truck would be making a weird sound that sounds like metal rubbing against metal? The only thing I can think of that might have caused it was going fast through a deep puddle on the highway in heavy rain that sent water everywhere.

    No recent work or mods.

How deep? Search for rear differential breather and that might give you an answer

When does the noise occur? Idle, slow speed, fast speed, accelerating, braking, etc.?

Does it get faster/louder as vehicle speed increase?

It seems to be tied to the movement of the wheels rather than engine. (no noise when reving in neutral, just with movement) Louder when backing up.

Your ebrake may be stuck or slighly engaged. It happens with water in the drums.

That could be it. It sounds like it's coming from the passenger rear drum. Not sure how to disengage it though. I'm at work with no tools.

I'd just engage it and release a few times. The drums (and rotors) will rust on the inside literally overnight with water present. The build up just has to grind off.

Well, turns out not the brake. It’s a bent heat shield dragging against the axle. Louder in reverse should have been the clue for me sooner, I guess.
