I "THINK" that max on all ARE caps are 800 lbs (yes, even the overland series). I emailed ARE and that's what they told me, unfortunately i dont have the email anymore....you might wanna email them again to double check.

From what I've gathered, the load ratings are for dynamic loading (driving down the road). The static load will be much more and as far as I understand, they don't give static load ratings, but folks put big ole RTTs on their caps and don't seem to have problems.

Leer asked me why I wanted the 100rcc vs the 100r. They said they are built the same and support the same weight. This was from the leer factory store in Oregon city, OR. The difference of the 100rcc is the ability to add shelving.

I hope you left the store and never went back. The RCC is the contractor version which can support more weight on the roof, and usually comes with a heavy duty roof rack as well.

I know this isn't apples to apples but my Snugtop dealer told me that their topper standard capacity rating was 500lbs. I don't know whether this is static or dynamic load but I was inquiring at the time about getting a package that included reinforcement at the corners. My understanding is that often times the limiting factor for load limits is the Yakima/Thule rack itself. I'm surprised I don't see more RTT supported by commercial racks that are supported by the bed rather than the topper.

I'll throw in another data point. Emailed Snugtop re: my Rebel top. Was told 200lb max dynamic and static load. I personally think this is overly conservative CYA numbers, as I have seen RTT's on many canopies that look stock to me. But, for what it's worth....

I think I am still putting a RTT on my canopy with a yakima roof rack. The racking folks say its fine.

I'd use extra cross bars for a RTT on a Yakima rack.

Thanks for the suggestion. Would you suggest a three cross bar set up? Can you attach the typical RTT to more than 4 contact points or is the extra bar help generally with weight distribution? Appreciate your point of view, as I am wrestling with the RTT idea--would really love to make it work.

One more point of view to share with the group on this topic. My local snugtop retailer told me that a snugtop rep unofficially said they are pretty comfortable with 300lbs static on the top. Given that a lot of the RTT weight is distributed to the ladder, seems like it's a definite possibility. Also, he told me that he's putting a lot of non-reinforced snugtop canopies on tacomas and a pretty high percentage of folks intended to put RTT's on them. He hasn't seen yet any come back with damage. Hearsay but at least another point of view.

    Thanks,
    N

Not sure if you guys care anymore but I have been shopping for toppers and have decided on ARE CX with HD option. I was actually interested in getting the Z series to get the clean look, but the ARE dealer I worked with told me that the weight limit on Z is 200lbs. The HD series (internal aluminum skeleton), only offered on CX and MX, increases the load capacity to 400lbs. It is not the look I want but it has exactly the functionality I am looking for.

What he said. Bought a Z-series cap yesterday. Called ARE on Friday, and the dealer backed up what they said: 200lbs on Z-series, 500lbs on anything with an X in the series name. I'm considering putting a Coleman Mach 8 Cub roof air on top of it, so I wanted to pin down the weight limit real good. Still, there are few things built today that are not service factored at least 2.0-3.0, if for no other reason than product liability. You can bet their engineers and their attorneys (and their insurance company's attorneys) have done their due diligence with the destructive testing and are not about to let ARE (or Leer, or any of the rest) advertise a weight limit anywhere near the actual weight capacity of the caps. It's a liability management thing.

Im in the same boat, either have to get custom build with reinforced fibre glass or buy the HD version or ARE at roughly 2400$ is it worth the wind drag with a rtt or mount below rough line? can any one chime in on what they've noticed with rtt high mounts

I was told the same by LA Camper Shell where I got my Rebel. 200 lb for both which did sound quite conservative. However, given that its thin-ish fiberglass (honeycomb or not) I'd be hesitant still about a tent and 2 people being up there.
